DBSTalks take a first look at the DirecTV HR21-700 HD DVR
The folks over at DBSTalk got an early look at DirecTV's latest HD DVR, the HR21-700. This unit appears to be an alternative to the HR20, rather than a replacement. The main difference between the HR20 and HR21 is that just like the HR21 Pro, the HR21 doesn't include an ATSC tuner for OTA HD broadcasts. This may be a problem for some because DirecTV doesn't offer all the HD locals in most markets. The HR21 also includes two Ethernet ports to eliminate the need for a switch when stacking multiple units, and is reportatly only available in a piano black finish. What really confuses us is that the MSRP is the same as the HR20, despite the lack of OTA tuner. Unfortunetly, the "first look" doesn't really provide much insight into the functional differences between the HR20 and HR21, but does say "Some sections of the HR21 setup menu seem to be faster than those on the HR20, while other parts are slower". The new unit does include faster chips so once the box hits the street we'll be very interested in hearing how the performance of this unit compares to the HR20.

Why would no ATSC tuner be a "problem"? The HR21 is meant for DirecTV customers who can get their local HD channels from DirecTV. If they need an ATSC tuner then they should get the HR20 which has ATSC tuners.

This model was introduced to reduce DirecTV's cost, and to make the shareholders happy. I love the glossy piano black finish. I was lucky enough to get a black HR20.

old7 --> its a problem because some will want to use the ATSC tuner but also will want to take advantage of other features directv is getting ready to roll out (swm, on-demand?)
(what were they calling their system again? directv active? the hr20/h20 will not be able to use this, correct?)

SWM and DirecTV on Demand are both currently being beta tested on the HR20-700. SWM is currently under beta on the HR20-100, with beta testing on DirecTV on Demand currently scheduled to start this weekend.

From a functionality point of view:
In a quick nutshell: HR21 = HR20 - ATSC
Everthing that the is going to be available on the HR20 will be available on the HR21... and vice versa... (after normal "time periods between software releases")

The biggest problem we have with our new HR21 700 (our hr20 700 died and they only replace it with the hr21 now in our area) is that neither the 720 or 1080 modes of output function. Also, the hdmi output is not active. Some tech support folks have acknowledged the problems others are claiming they know nothing about it. They have no idea when there will be a resolution so our shinny new hd21 700 should be labeled a sd21 700.

I had this unit installed on Wednesday and the HDMI and 1080I work just fine, I just need to know if I can connect it to a wireless network thru the ethernet connection.

I got hooked up monday and hdmi output is fine. It came with hdmi cable. I had a cable dvr (motorola) that was more user friendly, but I like some of the hr21 features more, some less. I was told by the phone salesman that he can download his movies onto his computer via the usb, but the papers say that usb output isn't active yet. I guess I'll find out later. Wish the hr21 had atsc tuner so I can get local in hd, but I just switch my tv mode to tv and view local hd with rabbit ears and no dvr capability.

I called DirecTV about an issue i was having with my service that finally got resolved. After talking about services on DTV, he mentioned the Video On-demand service would be activated on/or around February 28th 2008 on the HR21-700 first then other HD receivers then all Standard def receivers.

I have the HR20-100 and currently get the Video On-Demand on the box. You must plug the box into your network. Have not seen any HD on the VOD yet.

Thanks for the heads up regarding VOD on the HR21-700 on or about 28-Feb-08. My HR21-700 confirmed internet access via powerline hook ups. Looking forward to it.

I've had an HR21 for over a month, and it hasn't been pretty. With HD Tivo I got a nice HD picture, and with over the air signals I got an incredible picture. Now, with only the satellites and mpeg4, I get a mediocre (at best) HD picture. Very disappointed. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

The DTV guy is here right now upgrading me from the HR10-250 and I just learned the hard way that there is no OTA tuner on the HR21. So long 4 PBS channels and the 24 hour local weather station... oh well. I hope the HD quality is okay.
js237 @ Dec 25th 2007 10:01PM
I had the hr-21 installed yesterday. How do you go from one tuner to the other. With the HR10-250 it was simple.

I've had the HR21-700 for 3 days now, and it's been nothing but trouble. I've been having the Tuner 1 issue: tuner 1 goes out and won't come back until I do a few resets and then do some signal testing and transponder switching. Other times I'll get the guide downloading note in perpetuity. It may or may not go away after a reset.
Last night I switched the cable leads going into the box. I moved the lead, after the BBCs, from tuner 1 to tuner 2, and so forth. Wanted to see if it was the cable run. Yet, since then, I haven't had a problem. Go figure.
