Another week, another 10 new HD channels for DirecTV
This is a trend we can't ever get sick of talking about as DirecTV has now added new HD channels every week for the past four weeks. Up this week is a few more channels new to everyone as well as four regional sports networks. We'd bet DirecTV pushed up their normal Wednesday release for Fox Business HD, which happened to launch today. These bring the total new HD channels up to 47 in the past month. There are a few surprises here since Speed HD wasn't expected till next year, but a few we'd expected including, FX HD and Cartoon Network HD. Fox Business is a lot like CNBC HD, but the studio shots are actually in HD, so far it's the only HD we've seen on any of the channels in this batch, but there isn't usually a lot of HD programming on in the morning. Be sure to check out our updated gallery.
- Fox Business Network (359)
- HGTV HD (229-1)
- FX HD (248)
- Speed Network HD (607)
- Fuel HD (612)
- The Cartoon Network (296)

cartoon network? what program on that network would take advantage of hd?
DaiMac79 @ Oct 15th 2007 10:30AM
Apparently some of the Adult Swim programs, most notably Venture Brothers, are being produced in HD. The main advantage I would assume is screen space, having the true widescreen versus the letterbox allowing for better vistas and action shots with less pan.
http://jacksonpublick.livejournal.com/18830.html - Where one of the show writers mentions that Venture Brothers is going to be in HD this upcoming season.

My guess is a lot of the CG-based cartoons will exploit it.
Plus, if Cartoon Network has any intention of bringing over more Anime, then that'll take advantage of the format as well.

I agree, what cartoon would look better in HD?
Input?
RaidersFan75 @ Oct 15th 2007 10:24AM
it looks like cartoon network is stretch-o-vision right now there showing a scooby doo movie made in 1988 and it looks horrible stretched.

As a recent HDTV owner, Comcast has pretty much guaranteed that I will never do business with them again. When was the last time Comcast updated their schedule or gave ANY indication that they intended to do so in the near future?
While Comcast whines about the difficulties of getting contracts and obligations in place, DirectTV is pumpin' out the channels. Comcast, put up or shut up, you dorks.

I was expecting FBN HD today since it launched today, but DirecTV usually launches new channels on Wednesday.

Is there any talk whats so ever for Dish Network to get some of these channels?
john @ Oct 15th 2007 1:32PM
Dish better get moving soon. I'm about to jump ship.

I may have missed this in the last post so forgive me if I'm repeating something, but you pointed out last time that Food Network HD had a -1 in the channel like HGTV does. It seems that the -1 channels are showing different programming than the other channels which are simulcasting the same programming as the SD channels. In fact the channel numbers are the same! SciFi Channel is 244 and SciFi HD is also 244, so when you set the DVR to record something in HD you have to make sure you select the correct channel.
EEL @ Oct 15th 2007 2:12PM
Go into the on screen menu to edit your channel list ("favorites" for my HR20) and deselect the SD channels that you don't want, such as the SD version of SciFi on channel 244.

Am I missing something? The title says another 10 channels but the body of the post only lists 6.

Victor Cook said at Comic-Con that Spectacular Spider-man will be in HD when it comes out on KidsWB (or whatever) in March. He didn't elaborate, so I don't know if that means it'll also be in permanent widescreen, a la Justice League Unlimited. I personally think that series would also be served well with a 5.1 mix. But you're right in that current cartoons won't see an improvement in HD (just look at Family Guy on Fox or Legion of Superheroes on CW). If Spidey gets the full HD treatment, I think it'd be a first for an American animated TV series--and we can only guess what that'll look like.
zoltek @ Oct 15th 2007 12:18PM
ya must of missed this line.
"everyone as well as four regional sports networks"
EEL @ Oct 19th 2007 3:13AM
Nice catch, zoltek. The RSN are ch. 636 FSN Detroit HD, ch. 643 FSN Southwest HD, ch. 652 FSN West HD, and ch. 653 FSN Prime Ticket HD.

Ron C. @ Oct 18th 2007 10:32AM
Now DirecTV needs to add CW in HD---Smallville looks great in HD, but I can't receive it yet---
sittingwaytooclosetothetv @ Oct 19th 2007 10:20AM
Comcast continues to tell us via advertising on the radio that they have plenty of HD channels, plenty of football (You don't need the NFL Sunday Ticket... You don't need the Big Ten Network)... Their arrogance is going to start to catch up with them.
