Companies that think the way forward is a mass-market with their high def players all hooked up to the net as they get the constant stream of 'security' updates they need to even operate are kidding themselves.
Interactivity will be a nice additional point (when it's the consumers own chosen activity) for some but if they're seriously expecting older less tech-savvy people to regularly use the net for updates they are deluded. They are simply not going to use this.
If you start telling them that their new DVD player won't even work without constant 'security' up-dates etc you're looking at a prime recipe for major chunks of the market staying with what they have (SD DVD).
If ever there was a clumsy stupid counter-productive clunky garbage idea it is this one.
......and for what? To keep the multi-million $ 'security gravy-train' rolling at the 'ordinary' consumer's expense? (cos it sure as hell won't really be 'stopping' any serious 'pirate')
This 'DRM'/'security' is going to be a large part of the reason why Blu-ray will fail IMO.
Game console owners mightn't care about this kind of crap (well, that is right up until it stops their console working properly) but you can be sure the wider a/v market will not like it.
As for the other CE corporations backing Blu-ray? My bet is that they are thrilled at how they have spent vast sums developing BD & on new plant only to see their 'partners' Sony have locked out almost everyone & everything but their PS3 (and to a much lesser extent the S300). Not.
Samsung went dual. LG went dual and I don't expect them to be that last.
The PS3 just isn't shifting enough movies and HD DVD is selling strongly and growing as BD stagnates. IMO HD DVD will confound the projections of many and win the (far larger) a/v market. Blu-ray will be to the PS3 as UMD is to the PSP. A market of millions worth selling to for some time, of course, but basically dead and going nowhere.
"Blu-ray will be to the PS3 as UMD is to the PSP." There were controlled rights on UMD, bad bad analogy. Sadly, even a smart red camp guy would agree with me.
