NME's HD VMD players hit for under $200
Considering that the war between HD DVD and Blu-ray is still raging, we'd really be hesitant to jump on board NME's bandwagon. Nevertheless, New Medium Enterprises' proprietary HD VMD players are starting to show up for under two Benjamins, but of course, there's only a handful of notable films available on the format (for now, at least). Those still interested in giving it a whirl can jump on the ML622S ($189) or ML777s ($199) right now, but don't blame us if the content you're dreaming of never makes its way over to HD VMD.

Well personally I could care less if retail movies come to HD VMD.
I am really interested in whether they can play downloaded HD content (things like .mkv h/x 264 stuff) and everything my current SD DVD player can (Divx, Xvid, mpeg, jpeg etc etc).
If they can they it might be worth picking one up.

What a joke, Toshiba and Sony are fighting a battle over a market that commands 1% of disc sales. The last thing that is needed is another betamax product to further add confusion and division to the marketplace. As they are almost HD DVD anyway, why the hell didn't they just join forces with Tosh and maybe lend some weight to the current debacle, this is just stupidity of the highest order.

I'm not sure what NME has to gain here - if they're the only one building for the VME format, how do they expect to do anything but lose money?

Well, they are supplying free authoring tools to studios for 6 months if they sign on, and they've been doing a pretty good job with it. And with a blue laser, HD VMD is supposed to be able to hold up to 60 GB.
