Yes. They held out on the Blu-Ray release due to problems they were having with BD-J on some players. Not calling this to HD-DVD exactly, but just because it's specified does not make it superior to blu-ray. I for one choose blu-ray because of it's headroom storage capacity in present and future, and can hold out for extra features that soon being PiP/interactivity/etc.

My only neutral advice would be, compile a list of 20-30 movies that you like, and then narrow down to 10 that you love. Okay, can you tell me what EXACTLY do you admire in Blu-Ray technology? There are ONLY 2 things that seem better on paper (50gb and higher-bit rate) and they have been just proven that don't mean squat with the comparison of Nature's Journey awesome encodes from R&B Films on both HD DVD and Blu-Ray.

So there you have that bit-rate argument and we all know that TL51gb disc might as well become reality, not that it really matters as 30gb is just enough for everything.. a great video encode, great TrueHD lossless sound and a whole bunch of interactivity.


I actually think that without those 2 talking points Blu-Ray technology has actually MORE bad things, especially if you look at it as a consumer, which you should , since it's your money and freedom.

Increased DRM, incompatibility due to this DRM imposing, regional coding, lack of online accessibility for all players, problematic, overlycomplex BD-J implementation that costs more money to implement, completely unproven disc replication with quite possible crack and rot issues (as we really have no experience with this, not to mention that BDs are non-repairable if scratches unlike HD DVDs) and list just goes on.

I think it's funny that HD-DVD enthusiasts are now advocating what some of the lame BD enthusiasts had advocated, if it's not available in "your" format, just get the DVD. Some HD-DVD proponents called BS on that tactic, but others seem to be OK with it.

Here's my EXTENDED version just for you. First off, I have been a fan of Toshiba products for a long time, TVs had done right for me along. However, weighing out the pre notions of when HD-DVD and blu-ray were conceived, I started to do my research (almost pulling for HD-DVD years ago). Sure, M$ and Toshiba set the standards with a specified format, but I just believe they set the bar too low. You want to know why they don't have the bugs like blu-ray does? it's market control, fewer companies developing players (right now). While Sony, has teamed up with several strong companies, and in my opinion that's confidence right there.

BD-J bugs and what not, that comes along with too many companies, with miscommunications. It's been mentioned even when the Matrix first came out on DVD, there were bugs, there always have been, and I'm sure there have been drawbacks with HD-DVD as well, just not enough to make headlines, so to speak. As soon as one incident comes along with blu-ray, you exploit it like a virus, and shoot it down. It's almost like saying "Windows has a bug! it's going to lose the OS Battle", but clearly, there's a larger market share and company backing to keep it from losing, so to speak.

Even though the PQ is undeniably similar (with different bit-rates), I just find a preference to know my movies are at a higher bitrate and all those bugs and kinks of extra features/BD+ don't effect me for two reasons 1)I own a PS3, hands down quite possibly the best blu-ray deal ever, and yes a trojan horse for blu-ray BD+ isn't a factor 2)I really don't give a damn about PiP/Interactivity, just give me the damn movie, and give me sound channel options!

Another factor is, I'm a movie buff, and I've looked at the titles that are exclusive, and those are neutral, the blu-ray outweighs the verdict in my opinion, thus being a subjective decision.

The HD-DVD camp tries to play with this thing line of concrete and subjective. I am thinking like a consumer, I pay for what I want, and I choose the PS3 for multiple reasons. It's quite honestly the most powerful system for what you pay for, and while it has a limited selection of games (but i've got a big cue of pre-orders), it serves as a multi-media powerhouse.

HD-DVD to me, is going for a market beyond movie watching (on first approach), and I'm not into that, that's my personal choice, and they set the lowest common denominator for codecs and disc size. That's great, it works now, but I just don't see it holding for the future. I am not a tech analyst, I'm a techy geek, who just has a preference for blu-ray.

To me, Sony and other companies, are setting the standard higher, but are getting bit in the ass in the process working the kinks out, but it's a different path than that of HD-DVD, and I think they are gaining a lot of momentum.

When I read articles from blu-ray BDA execs saying "the war will be won by such n such date" I roll my eyes, this doesn't help me in my support for blu-ray. I just like the titles that are currently offer, and I prefer the roadmap of blu-ray, than that of HD-DVD. Somehow, to the HD-DVD camp, i'm either smart or dumb for making my decisions by choosing a side, and it's not.... IT. ... IS.... I will add that next week will be the first HD movie of either format that I have purchased myself and that movie will be Transformers. He is obviously a one eyed HD DVD supporter as am I , but I think he presents a lot of facts and knowledge on the subject and his posts are always rational, non abusive and fair, often unlike mine :)
However, if someone cant post in that civilized manner without getting lambasted by tools like you 3, i think it is you lot who should piss off from this site and not him. Why should I, Domordel, Devils Advocate, etc. have to "piss off" when this is a site that caters towards anything HD related which would include both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray?

If this was engadgetHD-DVD site, I could understand your point, but it is not and just because others don't share the same views as you doesn't mean we should have to "piss off".

I come here because I want to see Hi Def news whether it is new HDTV's, Blu-Ray, etc. If it is HD-DVD specific, I ignore it and move on. I would expect an HD-DVD fanboy to do the opposite and read HD-DVD posts and ignore the Blu-Ray posts, but clearly they do not.

If you call Nfinitys and other HD-DVD fanboys posts "civilized" then I think you need to re-read some of the posts. And I am referring to some posts that have been made specifically in Blu-ray related topics, which, if you have no interest in and just want to bash the format, then that clearly is trolling.

Don't know about enough about the sound -- to say. Is HD-DVD sound better than DVD sound? I piped the sound through my stereo for Star Wars, Sith, and it sounded pretty damn good...... Also, Sith was broadcast in 2.35:1 on HBO in HD -- it looked great! I also watched "Blood Diamond" on HBO HD and that was 16:9 instead of 2.35:1. I think for "Blood Diamond" the people shots are more powerful in 16:9. I'm neutral on the aspect ratio; the 42" screen works well for either 16:9 or 2.35:1.

TNT broadcast "Wild Wild West", audio dropouts on the DVR. I think those are the three I've seen in HD. Should I buy a "Blu-Ray" or an "HD-DVD" to get the most out of the 1080x1920 screen, or is cable broadcast 1080i just as good????? Also, can anybody get their HD-DVR's to record HD without occasional audio dropouts?

As for the sound, if you don't have surround sound, then no you won't notice a difference. If anything HBO will probably sound better since they down-mix for those without.

The PQ is good on HBO etc, but it can have artifacts due to the maximum bit-rate of cable/sat providers, but again usually it's not a problem, but it can be.
