With that said why in Gods name won't Disney release them? I have been a supporter of HD-DVD just for the simple fact that I absolutely LOATH Sony and their proprietary ways! And I have a 360 and I can add it to my setup rather cheaply. But all said they both have good points and good titles exclusive to one another. So to me things are tied right now. Still I have not bought either technology. How many others feel this way nothing pushing you over the edge to either format. So if Disney dropped their catalogue of Movies on Blue Ray, for me it would be what I need to reluctantly tip my scales towards Blu-Rapy(still loath sony).

bmw

Comments on HD DVD and Blu-ray releases on October 9th, 2007

hi bmw. I do think, however, that the Blu-Ray specification isn't finished. Also, I prefer the interactivity that HD DVD offers. This is interactivity that Blu-Ray may offer in the future; but no current players, with the POSSIBLE exception of the PS3, will be able to play 1.1 and 2.0 profile media when/if it arrives. Besides, HD DVD is affordable now and the players upscale your DVDs.

By the way, your child might like Shrek 3--I hear it's going to be an interactive smörgåsbord. It's like it was said in Tommy Boy, when Chris Farley made his first sale. his client was all about "but where's the guarantee?" And his point of sale was that all a guarantee was, is guaranteeing your product may be a guaranteed piece of shit.

Not calling this to HD-DVD exactly, but just because it's specified does not make it superior to blu-ray. I for one choose blu-ray because of it's headroom storage capacity in present and future, and can hold out for extra features that soon being PiP/interactivity/etc.

@Eddie:
I'm with you, i'm no fan of sony (TV's are overpriced), but I am a fan of blu-ray technology.

My only neutral advice would be, compile a list of 20-30 movies that you like, and then narrow down to 10 that you love. There are ONLY 2 things that seem better on paper (50gb and higher-bit rate) and they have been just proven that don't mean squat with the comparison of Nature's Journey awesome encodes from R&B Films on both HD DVD and Blu-Ray.

quote:
====
Now on to the big question, namely whether the increased bit rate on the BD disc resulted in a noticeable difference in picture quality over the HD-DVD disc. At normal viewing distances, I would have to say no. I watched both discs several times and compared segments of the discs back to back. At 8 to 10 feet from the screen, they looked identical to me. At closer distances, namely 2 to 4 feet from the screen, on just a few scenes did I think that I may have noticed a slightly more detailed picture on the Blu-Ray version. I say I think because the differences I saw were very, very minor. What I thought I was able to discern were slightly sharper edges to some objects in some but not all scenes. However, I very much doubt that I would be able to identify which disc was which in a double blind test the differences were that minor. To spot any differences took a lot of viewing at very close distances. One could very well argue that working that hard to spot differences means that there were no differences at all. First off, I have been a fan of Toshiba products for a long time, TVs had done right for me along. However, weighing out the pre notions of when HD-DVD and blu-ray were conceived, I started to do my research (almost pulling for HD-DVD years ago). Sure, M$ and Toshiba set the standards with a specified format, but I just believe they set the bar too low. You want to know why they don't have the bugs like blu-ray does? it's market control, fewer companies developing players (right now). While Sony, has teamed up with several strong companies, and in my opinion that's confidence right there.

BD-J bugs and what not, that comes along with too many companies, with miscommunications. It's been mentioned even when the Matrix first came out on DVD, there were bugs, there always have been, and I'm sure there have been drawbacks with HD-DVD as well, just not enough to make headlines, so to speak. As soon as one incident comes along with blu-ray, you exploit it like a virus, and shoot it down. It's almost like saying "Windows has a bug! it's going to lose the OS Battle", but clearly, there's a larger market share and company backing to keep it from losing, so to speak.

Even though the PQ is undeniably similar (with different bit-rates), I just find a preference to know my movies are at a higher bitrate and all those bugs and kinks of extra features/BD+ don't effect me for two reasons 1)I own a PS3, hands down quite possibly the best blu-ray deal ever, and yes a trojan horse for blu-ray BD+ isn't a factor 2)I really don't give a damn about PiP/Interactivity, just give me the damn movie, and give me sound channel options!

Another factor is, I'm a movie buff, and I've looked at the titles that are exclusive, and those are neutral, the blu-ray outweighs the verdict in my opinion, thus being a subjective decision.

The HD-DVD camp tries to play with this thing line of concrete and subjective. I am thinking like a consumer, I pay for what I want, and I choose the PS3 for multiple reasons. It's quite honestly the most powerful system for what you pay for, and while it has a limited selection of games (but i've got a big cue of pre-orders), it serves as a multi-media powerhouse.

HD-DVD to me, is going for a market beyond movie watching (on first approach), and I'm not into that, that's my personal choice, and they set the lowest common denominator for codecs and disc size. That's great, it works now, but I just don't see it holding for the future. I am not a tech analyst, I'm a techy geek, who just has a preference for blu-ray.

To me, Sony and other companies, are setting the standard higher, but are getting bit in the ass in the process working the kinks out, but it's a different path than that of HD-DVD, and I think they are gaining a lot of momentum.

When I read articles from blu-ray BDA execs saying "the war will be won by such n such date" I roll my eyes, this doesn't help me in my support for blu-ray. I just like the titles that are currently offer, and I prefer the roadmap of blu-ray, than that of HD-DVD. Somehow, to the HD-DVD camp, i'm either smart or dumb for making my decisions by choosing a side, and it's not.... IT. ... IS.... SUBJECTIVE...

domerdel

Comments on HD DVD and Blu-ray releases on October 9th, 2007

Movies and industry support vastly favor blu-ray.

11 of top 15 movies of 2006 are from blu-ray exclusive studios. 7 of top 15 from Sony themselves.

Box Office 2006 Source: Box Office Mojo

Position Title Studio Domestic Gross

1 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest BV $423,315,812 blu-ray only
2 Cars BV $244,082,982 blu-ray only
3 X-Men III: The Last Stand Fox $234,362,462 blu-ray only
4 The Da Vinci Code Sony $217,536,138 blu-ray only
5 Superman Returns WB $200,081,192 both
6 Ice Age: The Meltdown Fox $195,330,621 blu-ray only
7 Happy Feet WB $185,625,671 both
8 Night at the Museum Fox $165,150,384 blu-ray only
9 Casino Royale Sony $160,047,891 blu-ray only
10 Over the Hedge P/DW $155,019,34 hd-dvd only
11 Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby Sony $148,213,377 blu-ray only
12 Click Sony $137,340,146 blu only
13 Mission: Impossible III Par. $133,501,348 hd-dvd only
14 Borat Fox $126,598,982 blu-ray only
15 The Pursuit of Happyness Sony $124,834,524 blu-ray only

Paramaount only holds the #10 + #13 spots, Universal didn't make the top 15.

Top Ten Global Summer Blockbusters of 2007

# Film Gross ($M)
1 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End $958 blu-ray only
2 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix $912 both
3 Spider-Man 3 $890 blu-ray only
4 Shrek the Third $757 hd-dvd only
5 Transformers $685 hd-dvd only
6 The Simpsons Movie $482 blu-ray only
7 Ratatouille $390 blu-ray only
8 Die Hard 4.0 $356 blu-ray only
9 Ocean's Thirteen $305 both
10 The Bourne Ultimatum $278 hd-dvd only

7 on blu-ray, 5 on hd-dvd. 5 blu-ray exclusives, 3 hd-dvd exclusives, 2 neutrals.

Hd-dvd exclusive studios, Universal/NBC tv, and Paramount/Dreamworks
Blu-ray exclusive studios, Sony, including Columbia, 20th Century Fox/Fox tv, Lionsgate, MGM, Disney/Buena Vista, Miramax, Pixar, and Touchstone.
Plenty of good movies for both, but blu-ray has a much greater selection.
20th Century Fox has 29 titles coming before Xmas.
Put together these facts when I was on the fence trying to decide between the 2 formats. Except for the variable annoying audio dropouts (mostly DVR issue), which seemed to affect TNT more than HBO.

Don't know about enough about the sound -- to say. Is HD-DVD sound better than DVD sound? I piped the sound through my stereo for Star Wars, Sith, and it sounded pretty damn good...... Also, Sith was broadcast in 2.35:1 on HBO in HD -- it looked great! I also watched "Blood Diamond" on HBO HD and that was 16:9 instead of 2.35:1. I think for "Blood Diamond" the people shots are more powerful in 16:9. I'm neutral on the aspect ratio; the 42" screen works well for either 16:9 or 2.35:1.

TNT broadcast "Wild Wild West", audio dropouts on the DVR. I think those are the three I've seen in HD. Should I buy a "Blu-Ray" or an "HD-DVD" to get the most out of the 1080x1920 screen, or is cable broadcast 1080i just as good????? Also, can anybody get their HD-DVR's to record HD without occasional audio dropouts?
- Shel

Shel

Comments on HD DVD and Blu-ray releases on October 9th, 2007

OAR is the exception on those channels and for me it's the rule.
