Kansas City Royals to get 'world's largest' HD LED scoreboard
Quite frankly, it seems that each professional sports team that installs a fancy new HD scoreboard immediately assumes that it's the world's largest, and this go 'round, it's the Kansas City Royals keeping the trend alive. During the 2008 MLB season, Royals fans can feast their eyes on a 100- by 85-foot Daktronics display that utilizes HD-X LED technology, which the ball club says is "the largest HD LED board in the world." Additionally, Kauffman Stadium will be receiving a number of other Daktronics-sourced upgrades in 2009 / 2010, including an outfield fence display that measures around 8- by 128-feet, a pair of "ribbon boards" measuring in at 4- x 380-feet, and two displays above the stadium's new Hall of Fame that each span 5- by 108-feet. Now, if the Royals themselves prove to be worth watching, taking in a game next season may not be such a bad idea.

Isn't the one in Dolphin Stadium still the largest? It's 137 x 50 ft, and this one is 100 x 85, the Dolphin Stadium one is still 2 feet larger...

Check your math Munchound. Kaufman Stadium's will be 8500 square while Dolphin's is less than 7k.

I can't WAIT!!! I am KC native and a Royals fan, as painfull as that can be, but at least I can see the score in HD.

Ah...now I know why you have to pay 6 bucks for a bottled water there.
Bobby Hansen @ Oct 4th 2007 11:44AM
Ha, this is why the royals aren't competitive - sit and buy giant flat screens when the Yankees/Sox/Angels invest in players.
HD Tom @ Oct 4th 2007 11:45AM
While I love HD, wouldn't it be more prudent for the Royals to invest in ...oh, I don't know ... players??
Ian @ Oct 4th 2007 1:32PM
Maybe they'll show other games on the screen when KC's down by 12 in the 2nd inning...

Hey now. I think the Royals are slooooowwwwllly working their way back to the top. I am very excited to see this video board in action, but wasn't the Tokyo horse track the largest?

Well there go our cheap-ass ticket prices.
joshman @ Oct 5th 2007 12:35AM
What a waste. How about putting this in a stadium where people will actually see it.

Actually the money to pay for the score board and the stadium upgrades will be provided by tax payers. This was voted on either last year or the year before. There was once talk to build a new stadium downtown, but the voters decided to update Kauffman Stadium (Royals) and Arrowhead (Chiefs) stadium. Yes the owners are contributing some money but this is mostly from taxpayer money. Also, this scoreboard update is just part 1 of many parts that will be updated.
