Samsung pulls plug on BDP-2400, delays BD-UP5000

Bad news from Samsung today: the high-end BDP-2400 Blu-ray deck has been cancelled, and the dual format BD-UP5000 has been delayed. The linked article speculates that the BDP-2400 has fallen victim to the transition to BD 1.1 spec, which occurs on October 31. Worst of all, mum's the word on when/whether Samsung plans on making a 1.1 spec player available. For those who didn't have their heart set on Blu-ray, the bad news is that Samsung has delayed their dual format BD-UP5000 player until December. The silver lining to this December delay could be twofold: the unit will be at least up to BD 1.1 spec conformance; and now this unit's arrival might coincide with your holiday wishlist.

that is definitely bad news, is it going to start happening with all upcoming standalone players?? not good.

so how come all reports of the 2400 being canceled and the 5000 being delayed all point back to the same article from WesleyTech?
Until I see an official press release from Samsung, I will take this as a rumor.

It's definitely not a rumor. I got an email from our buying group confirming the BDP-2400 was not coming to market and all orders were canceled.

I wouldn't be so certain that that Samsung dual format player is 'profile 1.1' or 'profile 2.0'.
There was a Samsung Germany press release knocking about which had it down as only 'profile 1.0'.

What "denial" do you speak of? Is it related to the BD-J profile again? I had thought that Samsung has already set this to rest stating that chipset would support 1.1 and be upgradeable to support 2.0?
Translated from German says;
"The BD-UP5000 supports the interactive abilities of both hp formats as so far some Standalone Player: iHD for HD-DVD and BD-Java (BD-J of profiles v1.0) for Blu ray. Both with HD-DVD and Blu ray Disc should be possible it to load over an Internet entrance via network connection further contents. The interface can be used also for software updates."
I'm also wondering where that German release came from. Did it come directly from SamsungUSA? Just curious as I am becoming more and more confused.

@Ryan - I meant that there's no announcement of a 1.1 profile Blu-ray only replacement for the BDP-2400. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

If this proves to be true, it would seem as though Samsung knows something we don't. As far as I can tell it seems as though Samsung is far more interested in hedging their bets than supporting on side or the other exclusively.
Anyone else agree?

Samsung is only interested in making money. So I doubt they are super loyal to either Blu-ray or HD-DVD.

It seems like Denon were right, it's hard not to conclude that profile 1.1 and profile 2.0 still just won't play nice with the existing profile 1.0.

SpenceJT, sorry for not including this in the 1st post.
I'm certain I've seen a Samsung Germany press release which stated the BDP5000 was profile 1.0 (though there is the possibility that this is a translation quirk as the correct term for profile 1.1 is, apparantly, "Profile 1.0 Final Standard Profile".
This has been debated ad infinitum on avs (I see you are there and contributing).
Ther have been comments about what the chip will and will not do - Luma Keying seems open to question (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=828109&page=24).
Right now I'd say it's open to question (which is what I said originally)......although unless the standard itself gets another delay (which is hardly an off-the-wall possibility......it has been set back 4 or 5 times already) it's going to have to be by the time they eventually get it to market.

I'm praying it is false because I would really like one of these, but it a delay means that the product is up to date with the latest standards (something nearly impossible these days), I am all for it.

Perhaps Samsung believes the format-war will be over soon and in Blu-ray's favor which would negate the need for a combo player. If that is indeed the case, I'd expect that Toshiba would ultimately be the sole manufacturer of combo drives, much like Pioneer made those LaserDisc/DVD combo players for some time. In that scenario, no other manufacturer would be interested in paying for dual licenses just to try to win over a small existing user-base except for Toshiba would would want to recuperate some of their losses by cashing in on their customers migration over to Blu-ray.

The Jeremy, if that was so then why on earth would Samsung abandon their 'high-end' BDP 2400 Blu-ray player?
Far more likely IMO are continuing problems with getting profile 1.1 and profile 2.0 discs and players working properly with the existing profile 1.0 discs and players.
.....or they know that even worse news for Blu-ray is coming?
