In the alphabet soup that is the format war, the latest codec to finally come to fruition is
DTS-HD MA. Up 'till now a few
Blu-ray titles have included DTS-HD MA tracks, but no one's been able to enjoy them until now. Samsung has released a firmware update for the BD-P1400 -- yes already -- that enables this lossless codec to be sent via
HDMI 1.3a to an audio/video receiver to be decoded. As exciting is this may be to some, we suspect that this feature will go unnoticed to most people, as the number of receivers out there right now sportin' this feature is really limited.

...YAWN....

If you're not interested, don't click the link.
This is important information to those following the format war closely, and good news for HD Media in general.

I guess this is nice if you have a receiver that can support it. Mine doesn't even take advantage of DD7.1. I guess it's time to upgrade.
TrentD @ Sep 28th 2007 10:23AM
Yeah, I have my eyes set on the Denon 2808CI, but it's serious $$$...

I am following the format war, and this is an absolute YAWN, so how does Go F**k yourself sound?

Yeah!

C'mon PS3! Follow suit!! Light my logo up on my Onkyo 605! Hell, don't light it up, decode internally! Just give me some lovin..
Sean @ Sep 28th 2007 11:08AM
Good news if you have a receiver that was just released. My receiver is only 1 year old and supports HDMI 1.2 :) So, this update still doesn't hit the nail. Players need to decode internally as well as externally. Keep working on it Samsung your almost there.

How is this noticeably better than Dolby TrueHD, which is included on every HD DVD player sold? So far, to get lossless audio on Blu-ray, you seem to need to have uncompressed PCM on the disc, which pretty much eats up that extra space and bandwidth.
mcrexx @ Sep 28th 2007 11:58AM
PCM does take up a bit more space, but blu-ray has more than enough space for it. Example, the BD of 300 had Uncompressed PCM AND Dolby TrueHD.
JeffDM @ Sep 28th 2007 4:30PM
From what I can find, TrueHD is lossless.
gparris @ Sep 28th 2007 11:46AM
I agree with Kevin Murphy on this one, Dolby TRUEHD is available on every HD DVD player sold and it is becoming more commonplace even on BD players, too and it is considered "lossless".
-Could anyone really notice the difference in Dolby TRUEHD and DTS-HD Master? I think not.
-Could or can anyone notice the difference in DTS-HD HR vs. Master, since newer BD players like the Panasonic 10A and upcoming Sony S500 do/will decode the HR internally?
The few AVRs out there will decode the fully-lossless DTS-HD MA, great, but will anyone really notice that much of difference?
Why don't studios just use Dolby TRUEHD for lossless and stay with that?
TrentD @ Sep 28th 2007 12:45PM
...Blu-ray had to find something to waste all that space on 300 since it had NONE of the interactivity extras the HD DVD had ;)
Since TrueHD is required on all HD DVD players, there's no need for a redundant LPCM track. Since Blu-ray's low-spec players don't have to include TrueHD or DTS:MA, content providers have to give the "backup" LPCM track, wasting space and bandwidth for the "dumbed down" Blu-ray players out there without onboard lossless decoding.
...and you guys thought Blu-ray was the more advanced format :) ...

"TrentD" Yeah, I have my eyes set on the Denon 2808CI, but it's serious $$$...
It is a wonderful receiver. I've had it for a couple weeks now and it is the best. I only spent $700 though. Best Buy Discount. HA
TrentD @ Sep 28th 2007 3:26PM
I was once a blue-shirt too, and I miss that discount! I assumed $700 was the employee cost on that. I'm going to talk to a friend there and see if he'll discount it down to about $900-$1000, and then I'll use $500 of BB gift cards I have through my CC company!
Gaber @ Sep 28th 2007 7:58PM
I hope the PS3 gets that update soon! I have a DTS-MA demo disc that sounds great with just the DTS core at 1.5Mbps, but the MA should sound incredible!

Keep saving your allowance, you'll be able to buy big boy toys one day.

I was about to smash you back when I realized you are pro HD DVD as am I, so i will let that last comment go with a polite wave. Last thing this war needs is a split in the ranks.

I note that the BD-2400 big brother to this (with the high end Reon processor) has been cancelled, and the BD-UP5000 dual unit pushed back to December (making it 1.1 spec minimum with all the hardware needed for 2.0, due to meeting HD DVD).

What a dissapointment......
Out of all of the players to do this first, it has to be the one with a non-detachable powercord that is about a quarter of the diameter of good speaker wires. Too many companys do not go the extra step to ensure their product will be adopted into higher end systems.

Hey everyone just wanted to chime in and say hi to all you audiophiles. I'm looking forward to the update from Sony for the DTS master. By the way...i have listened to both Dolby and DTS and DTS blows Dolby out of the water!
