You have to exit media center and access them through the XBOX 360 interface. Other than that I REALLY wish they'd allow cable cards on home built PCs. Also, I'm hoping when using the 360 as a set top box for U-Verse, it can be done flawlessly through Media Center.

JimJimBinks

Comments on

Media Center is definitely going through some serious growing pains. It's not the perfect do everything machine, but it gets the job done for the average household. I'm not trying to say stop your whining cause heck I sure would like to see it do a whole lot more, but when my wife uses it she is still blown away along with all of my other non-super techy friends. However, this is crappy option for HD content and the lack of FULL support is putting the whole HTPC concept at risk.

The lack of HD / Blu native support is almost a deal breaker for me right now. Even having MyMovies automatically open Cyberlink's PowerDVD HD to play HD content is a pretty bad compromise. There is no way to get a digital 7.1 signal to a receiver. Optical / Toslink can only handle 5.1. Most HD content is only 5.1 now but even if you wanted to get that HD, digital 5.1 signal to your receiver, you are out of luck. Cyberlink PowerDVD has to downsample HD audio to no higher than 48 kHz 16 bits-per-sample before sending to the audio driver.

Until MCE supports HD or Blu content natively (and does not downsample audio) OR Cyberlink decides not to downsample HD audio *AND* someone comes out with a way to get a digital, non downsampled, 7.1 signal to a receiver, the whole HD HTPC concept is self-defeating IMO.

Aaron

Comments on

While it is a long way from perfect, I'm happy with what MC does. I think part of their problem is that they are ahead of the curve in concept, but behind it in execution. Meaning a lot of the key things that MC does are ahead of the times for the mass market. Not in terms of price but in terms of people having the vision to want something like what MC does. When it comes to enthusiests and the things they want, it's behind the times.

With that said, I certainly don't see this as "make it or break it" for the product, as another poster said. Microsoft rarely throws in the towel this quickly and as long as they stick with the product, keep gathering support and keep evolving it, they will be in perfect position to be the defacto standard for media center setups when the mass public is ready to catch on.

I do wish cablecard support was easier, but that's not really their fault.

jsn

Comments on

When Media Center is working, it works GREAT, but when it's not, well it's not so great anymore. MS is trying to do a lot with it. Different Countries around the world have Different TV Specs, and Hardware, which makes it more tricky, which is why it's better in the US, but MS can't do anything about the Restrictions of HD DVD and Blu-Ray and Cable Cards, etc. This is the BS that DRM does. What Blu-Ray has Double of.

Media Center is a great Idea, and it could be the #1 device in People homes if everything would just come together. Having just 1 PC being able to dish out all your Music, Pictures, TV, Videos, Movies, etc and have Cheap Media Extenders placed where you need them that can also access all the same content at any time is Great. With the way things are now with DRM I don't see it happening any time soon. Music at least is starting to go DRM free.

JBDragon

Comments on

What really matters is a remote that is easy to use and u don't pay someone $$$$ so much a hour to program, Hd DVD , BLU RAY, MEDIA CENTERS, people want it simple again. It records HD locals in the clear through QAM, captures my analog SD cable, has several useful 3rd part applications, and with a little tweaking automatically skips commercials for me. It works flawlessly through my xbox and has the most bautiful interface I could hope for--expanding the possibilities of the xbox 10 fold from what I purchased it for.

All that and I can tell the cable company to screw their 70 bucks a month fees with their sucky DVR.

The complaint oer hd-dvds is valid, as is not being able to stream DVDs to the xbox, but you can in fact stream wmvs to the xbox.
