Verizon celebrates two years of FiOS
For some (like the folks who can't get it yet), it may not seem like Verizon's FiOS has actually been around for two whole years, but indeed it has. This month marks the two year anniversary of the fiber-based service, and Verizon is taking time out to boast a bit. Reportedly, "more than 25-percent of the customers [in its first market, Texas] who could subscribe to FiOS TV have done so," and as of June 30, 2007, Verizon FiOS TV "had 515,000 subscribers and was available to more than 3.9-million households in 12 states." 'Course, you could certainly throw a much larger party if nearly four-fifths of the states in our country weren't left out, but hopefully a few more of us will be included for the next bash.[Via TVOver]

Second that. Shows how backward our system is here when you've got a great service and tons of people ready to pay for it. Guess all the Verizon employees are busy showing up for those commercials they've been making.
Phase 1 - collect underpants
Phase 2
Phase 3 - Profit!

Still waiting in upstate NY....

If you don't have Verizon as a landline phone company, you'll never see FiOS.

Tell them to put down the champagne and get back to work. They can't party until I can get FiOS.
UnnDunn @ Sep 26th 2007 6:59PM
FiOS user here and loving it.
I'd wrap all this bandwidth around me like a warm blanket if I could.

Ummm... I think it's more like 95% of the country that's been left out.
CharlieX @ Sep 26th 2007 7:07PM
They've had it 7 blocks from us in Redondo Beach for awhile.... but not at my house. run that line! run it verizon!

Manhattan Beach and, I was the first kid on my block to get it.
I know 'cause during the 2 DAY INSTALL, they discovered the actual trunk line to my local hub had not been laid. Nice.
Big Red actually had to roll a monster truck to my street.
Once in 15 Mbs of light baby! (30 is available)
Bundled my HD-DVR TV (picture is PERFECT), all phones and the aforementioned web for a total of $100/mo.
Two other things
First, if you go for the TV w/ DVR, insist on the new Phillips remote. If you have the system already, call and demand a free upgrade.
They tried to stiff me on it, but finally relented. It is designed for the new/improved software package and works MUCH better.
Best new feature: a "skip ahead" button with 3 settings!!! (10, 30 & 60 seconds)
Second, though its fashionable to bash your Telco of choice, I gotta give props to VZ's customer service.
Used to HATE them as GTE but over the last several years, I think they may have improved to be the best CS/Tech support (of any kind) which I call.
For all of you that can't get it, I am truly bummed. I may have to move soon and I'll likely be back in the boat with ya :-(
'Till then though life is good.

I have access to FIOS internet here in western PA, but the TV stuff is being blocked by politicians. F'ers. I really want the whole package, and will gladly pay for it. As it stands, I can get 15Mbit service and unlimited long distance for $69/mo. Not bad. I hate Comcast (2.5 hours to install 2 cable cards in my TiVo HD!).

Do they throttle BitTorrent usage?
ryan @ Sep 28th 2007 9:24AM
I wish I could get it in the Charlotte area but other than wireless there is no Verizon here. :(

I love how Connecticut is listed as a state with Fios when only one part of one town, Greenwich, which is in the southwest corner of the state touching New York (and coincidentally is one of the most expensive towns in the US), can get it.
Fios is a nice service, but everyone in this country has already paid for the deployment of fiber everywhere, not just the markets Verizon can make the most money off of. Google "broadband scandal".
