Pioneer's DV-800AV DVD player upscales to 1080p, plays SACD
Nah, Pioneer's DV-800AV won't play back HD DVDs or Blu-ray discs, but it should make those vanilla DVDs look an awful lot better. This fairly high-end device sports HDMI / component outputs and optical / coaxial digital audio ports, and it plays nice with a plethora of file types including WMV, DivX, JPEG, MPEG-4, AAC and WMA. For those still clinging to the fledgling music format, there's even support for SACD, and the Burr Brown 24-bit / 192kHz PCM1796 DAC should impress, too. The unit is all set to launch late next month for ¥70,000 ($611).

ummm you could get a Blu or HD player for a lot less. If you need SACD you should already have a player.

The US equivalent is the DV-58AV, $500, shipping within the next couple of months. Also plays DVD-Audio. Oscar and Grammy-winning AirStudios has given it their stamp of approval, reserved only for the best audio transports, which is noteworthy.

There's only so much a scaler can improve the video without going to heroic ends, I don't think it's as fast as real time yet. Just get an HD player and usually you'll get a machine with a very good upscaler too.

If people are scared to invest in HD-DVD and or Blu Ray Disc, why in the world would they waste time with this thing. There is only so much an upscaler can truely do and if you are all over SACD you should already have one. And if you want to get into SACD, you can get a PS3 that plays, DVD(upscales to 1080p,BDs,CDs,and SACDs.)

Dude you guys are missing the whole point. This thing not only upconversts dvd's but plays cd's at very high quality with the brown D/A converter.
Only those willing to pay >$300 for ONLY a cd player would know. Everyone else bashing this product is ignorant and missing the point. I'm not even saying this is the best product to buy either but people seem to be missing what this product market. This is probably the same people who buy $50 cd players and think all are the same.
