Microsoft adds Slingbox-like capability to its Media Center PCs
Microsoft, never content with just monopolizing one segment of the market, has decided to dip its big, scary toes into the Slingbox-ish world of anywhere-TV with a new piece of software for its Media Center PCs. Using the newly acquired (but not new) WebGuide component -- created by a gentleman named Doug Berrett -- you can now tune into your Media Center content from any place you have web access. The software actually goes beyond what Slingbox is capable of, giving you full control over your system remotely, allowing you to set record times, change schedules, and generally go buck-wild, even from a mobile phone or WiFi equipped PDA. Ballmer and Co. also added an ITV function to MC PCs, though apparently all it does is offer C-rate "internet" content for MCE users. Clearly, what's exciting here is WebGuide -- the software is free, and presuming you already have your system up and running, you could be "slinging" video around before you know it.

Ummm ... actually if I connect my Slingbox to a TiVo, I can do anything that I could do at home with a remote (e.g. set up a recording, look at schedules, change settings, etc). So I don't see the difference except exchanging a TiVo and Slingbox for a Media Center PC.
How's the throughput?

WOO-HOO Thats sounds awesome, even though i know there were similar programs out before. this one sounds much easier to work with, and for me its much much less expensive than any other solution, now what would really be cool is if it works with a psp!

This is the kind of thing that would make me pick up a Media Center PC. I could the use my Xbox360 as a nice front end. I have Myth and its ability to do these kind of things is one of things I love about it.

I have this installed at home and it works pretty damn well! I watch Live and recorded TV from my Samsung i730 and XV6700 OTA, as well as from any computer with a decent internet connection.
Quality on the phone is limited by Verizon's ability to serve up the bandwith on my phones.
Quality on the desktop is reasonable - 500k setting is better than Tivo in low quality mode on a local tv (we have one at the office)
Overall, very pleased with the product.
