Another day, another
scuffle over which format is selling the most. Of course, it's been made relatively
clear which side is
moving the most discs of late, but just as Sony cited a recent NPD Group study that claimed Blu-ray players had outsold HD DVD units "in the last nine weeks," Toshiba hit back with a brief but pointed rebuttal. Rather than focusing on the recent past, Tosh reiterated that year-to-date, Blu-ray players only held 42-percent of the market share, and also proclaimed that its HD DVD players were still listed as "
top sellers" at a few select retailers. Sure, all this fuss is just over fuzzy numbers, but it's fun to watch from ringside, now isn't it?

All about the spin you put on it.. Take Sony's take on the next-gen console war. PS3 sold around 131k compared to 360 (277k) & Wii (404k) They put it this way:
"a strong month for the PlayStation brand"
Good stuff there.
Mak @ Sep 14th 2007 7:31AM
You realise of course, those number you post, are north america only, and the world is alot bigger.
Outside the US, PS3 is generally outselling he 360, and Blu-Ray is going great (in the UK, it's rare to see shops even stock HD DVD discs, but Blu-Ray discs are easy to find).
Don't be fooled into thinking 1 week PS3 sales, and what you see at BestBuy is representitive of the war as a whole.
Mike @ Sep 14th 2007 6:30AM
Do you guys get paid per post from Sony? You had part of this story up a week ago and now you add links to other stories of blue ray thumping it's chest about something.
Everytime blue ray fanboys get worried about HD DVD they start the misinformation spin.
Let's just see who has the better Christmas season. AND till we find out what movie will be the 1st 51gb HD DVD movie. :)

1 week? PS3 has never been out of 3rd place between XBOX360 and Wii...look at NPD figures for last 2 months
July tally:
Nintendo Wii: 425K
Nintendo DS: 405K
Sony PlayStation 2: 222K
Sony PSP: 214K
Microsoft Xbox 360: 170K
Sony PlayStation 3: 159K
Nintendo GBA: 87K
And here's August:
PlayStation 2 202K
PlayStation 3 130.6K
PlayStation Portable 151.2 K
Xbox 360 276.7K
Wii 403.6 K
Nintendo DS 383.3K
GBA 69.5K
Ps3fanboy has a article up people are waiting for the $400 ps3. just like HD DVD buyers are waiting for 3rd generation.

Mike said,
"You realise of course, those number you post, are north america only, and the world is alot bigger.

DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE THAT? Where did you get that info?
Please get the facts before you vomit up your personal views.
As of Aug. 23rd:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/23/total-wii-sales-surpass-the-xbox-360-worldwide/
As you can see the PS3 has yet to meet Wii or the 360 even halfway in sales, WORLDWIDE.
Reality is the PS3 has a LONG, LONG way to go before capturing the market.
Ryan P @ Sep 14th 2007 12:00PM
Note that Xbox 360 addon doesn't count either. While it's a lot less than PS3, all of those people are in it for the movies and aren't being forced into blu-ray camp. I'm not denying Sony may end up on top because of it, but no one ever mentions this.
Interested Watcher @ Sep 14th 2007 8:16AM
100% more of almost nothing is still almost nothing.
The high def market hasn't even got going yet (it's under 3% of the total retail movie disc market).
Let's see how things are when the $149 Venturer HD DVD player comes out this X-mas.
Then we'll have a look at how Q1 & 2 of 2008 goes and the impact of CH-DVD (to all intents & purposes identical to HD DVD and will therefore be driving down HD DVD component prices).
We'll be seeing more even cheaper entry-level HD DVD player - perhaps surprisingly the 'reference design' chosen has them modelled on the gen 3 HD DVD player......sub $100 by the end of Q1 2008?
No wonder Viacom/Paramount jumped.
.....and if what Denon have to say is true
(that they are still working "very hard" on getting 'profile 1.1' and 'profile 2.0' players and discs to work properly with 'profile 1.0' players and discs)
the future is not looking at all good for Blu-ray right now.
"Q: Will that load the information to the disc's menu system?
JT: Most likely. I haven't seen it in true operation yet; once I get it, obviously, I'll know. But that's the premise. So you can have running pictures of the director, of the actors doing commentary or whatever other material the studio feels that they want to give you to make it a truly interactive experience. After that, it's standard Blu-ray.
But there is a possibility and this is maybe not so public knowledge that when these discs come out that fit this new profile, they may not work properly with the Profile 1.0 players.
Q: Really?
JT: Its a possibility, and thats why were working very hard to make sure that our products will be okay with any previous discs and new discs."

I wont disagree that the PS3 is not outselling the 360 or the Wii, but people think the PS3 is doing so terrible (well mostly hd-dvd groups). Clearly look at the timeline of when x360 was launched 10 months later. PS3 is doing great. There's great numbers, and there's ridiculously awesome (that's where the wii comes into play).
Even after holiday sales, there wont be anything substanial as far as leads until sometime in 2008 (just my guess, no citations).
ckelly @ Sep 14th 2007 11:25AM
Isn't February 2007 going back a litle far to pull statistics for next generation sales? Heck that's 25% of either format's lifespan!! I thought there was a much more recent article out of CEDIA that showed HD-DVD had eclipsed Bluray sales for the first time in the last few months - isn't that more recent history?? Crap that quote came straight out of Sony's camp. Where's the link on that?
Angus_rg @ Sep 14th 2007 12:06PM
If you do a study of the right candidates, you can show smoking does not cause cancer.
I did a study to show 99% of these surveys are bias.
I just got a copy of Game Informer(or whatever mag they give you when you sign up for the club at game stop) and it said that the 360 has sold more games then both the Wii and PS3 combined. The article made it "sound" like it was number of titles, but never said specifically, numbers, revenue, geographics, etc. If I looked hard enough, I could probably find stats showing the Atari 2600 was the highest selling console in some 3rd world country, but if I never say where, it really distorts the article.
I mean, numbers over the Wii sounds quite possible since Wii is targetting a lot more weekend wariors, but still, unless I know all the details of the study......
joe @ Sep 14th 2007 1:17PM
So either Toshiba is right and blurray has an HIGHER attach rate than HD-DVD, an attach rate that HD-DVD supporters here claim is all that matters.
Or Sony is right and they have the most stand alone players, a figure that HD-DVD supporters here say is important.
Independent if either one is true bluray media is outselling HD-DVD internationally. Which according to HD-DVD supporters here does not matter.
ani4ani @ Sep 14th 2007 1:21PM
The 360 has historically SOLD more than the PS3, purely because it has been out for a year longer WITHOUT any competition from either the Wii or the PS3. Even the PS2 still wipes the floor with the 360, and that is nearly 8 years old.
Mike @ Sep 14th 2007 10:12PM
Having been out longer does explain why there are more Xbox360's then ps3's in total sold. But the fact the 360 sold more then ps3 in the month of July and the month of Aug is due to current demand.
Currently more consumers want 360's then ps3's...will that change if a 40gig $400 ps3 comes out...might. Could it change again if a $200 Xbox360 comes out?
Fact is...with ps3's and Xbox360's sitting on shelves waiting to be bought...more people are buying the 360.
drew @ Sep 14th 2007 2:41PM
I find it hard to believe that there are people that actually believe the PS3 is anything else than an unmitigated failure.
Blu was not ready and in many ways is still not, the decision to force consumers into a format is costing Sony BILLIONS.
Why have there been so many firings at the high levels of Sony if this was not true? They were fired because they were successful?
When will people realise that Sony is far worse of a monopoly that MS? Why has the DOJ not got on their backs?
How is owning the movie studios, format and players not a monopoly?
joe @ Sep 14th 2007 2:57PM
Drew,
It has something to do with an overall company profits being very good. I've got stock and it has done very well. I wish I put more in Sony before the ps3 launch.
Sony is not a monopoly. Bluray is not propriety. I can watch my Disney movies on my Samsung player and not ever touch a Sony product or movie. The BDA owns bluray and there are currently many player makers as well as studios.
That's pretty much the opposite of a monopoly.
But please pass the hatorade. Lies and bias make the internet go round.
Craig @ Sep 14th 2007 3:07PM
Sure, all this fuss is just over fuzzy numbers, but it's fun to watch from ringside, now isn't it?
Um, no, it's not. While the elephants play out their format tug-of-war, which really only feeds their coffers and egos, we consumers have to suffer higher prices, restricted content availability, and delayed innovation as many hardware makers have chosen not to participate. I'm tired of the format war and just want _A_ winner...any winner...thank you very much.
Jay @ Sep 14th 2007 3:18PM
i wonder why they wanna talk the past years or so but not right now and not call sony corp. liers stright up. i mean if they really arent selling as much as they claim then call it out. we all know that hd dvd launched before blu ray so yeah and its always been cheaper so damn right it would have sold more in the past. we know that already but the question is who is telling the truth right NOW. interesting tho.
