CE-Oh no he didn't! Part XLII: BDA hints that 51GB HD DVD is a publicity stunt
Not long after we got wind of Sony and Toshiba's latest cat-fight, along comes Frank Simonis, chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association, to stir the ever-whirling pot even more. In a recent interview with Tech.co.uk, Mr. Simonis was said to have insinuated that "the HD DVD Group's BD-trumping 51GB disc announcement is purely a publicity stunt," and he actually noted that he was "not surprised at all." Additionally, he claimed that the HD DVD camp was "very much in a reactive mood," and added that he had "not heard anything about a production line for the odd format." Oh, and on the topic of whether existing HD DVD players would actually be able to read the newfangled discs should they actually appear, he frankly proclaimed that we "better ask them," as he "questions it very much."[Thanks, Dave J.]

Look at that Champion!
Blah blah blah.
I think Blu Ray is sony's publicity stunt to finally successfully screw consumers with their countless and ridiculously proprietary formats.
So there.
bruckwine @ Sep 14th 2007 4:45PM
Paranoid is what he sounds like!
Kris @ Sep 14th 2007 4:47PM
Hahahahha, whats funny is his own 2 layer BD 50 is a publicity stunt, so rare to find a blu-ray title actually on a BD 50! Look at the newly announced Robocop on a BD 25 as MPEG2 codec, what a disgrace to their boasted "Superior format due to capacity." He is obviously scared to death for their half-baked format.
Sean @ Sep 14th 2007 4:46PM
LOL I was wondering when the BDA would say something about the HD-51. Thats funny. I mean, what can they really say!!! LOL You guys have no idea how funny this is :)

if you include paramount/dreamworks, thats 119...take them out...still 103, so...a little more than half the titles out are on 50 gb discs
domerdel @ Sep 14th 2007 4:55PM
whats up with brits and the windy hair look? I will agree with his point of view, this is a publicity stunt by the HD-DVD guys.
Kris: there are more BD50 discs in production and already out there. Robocop is Mpeg4.
apease @ Sep 14th 2007 5:01PM
At least there are BD-50 movies already out there, when the HD-DVD camp was saying it was all sci-fi. And I'm still waiting for confirmation that HD-51 will work on first and second gen players... How long will it take for HD-51 to actually get used?
But the best part is suddenly capacity is important to the HD-DVD camp, so now they've got that extra one gigabyte the format war is over! lol. And Blu-Ray still has much higher bandwidth.
Alex @ Sep 14th 2007 5:08PM
the CEO must be a frequent AVS poster. I kind of agree with him though, I would love for my XA1 to play TL51 but I doubt it will be able to, if they actually start getting used. I am not mad though, early adopters should expect this. My first 2 DVD players didn't play burned DVD-Rs worth a damn/at all and a lot of branched programming didn't work for years. Plus, there is always BD 1.0, 1.1. 2.0 etc...
Michael @ Sep 16th 2007 6:30PM
Alex, the reason your first two DVD players had a hard time playing burned DVDs was due to the laser, not the firmware. Earlier DVD players used a wider (different color frequency) laser and could not accurately read the shallower pits the burned media used compared to commercial discs. Once the industry converted to a higher frequency laser (why do you think BD uses a blue laser?) it could now read pretty much all the standard format media out there. The newly proposed triple layer HD disc is just that, a triple layer instead of a dual layer. To put it simply, all that should be required is a firmware update to tell the laser where to focus so it can read the additional layer of data and voila - instant upgrade. I'm sure it's more complicated than that but you get the idea. It really shouldn't be that difficult to upgrade all the current players out to be able to read these higher capacity HD-DVDs.
Nfinity @ Sep 14th 2007 5:13PM
I just keep bookmarking these statements from BDA so I can make a collection on the most iditioc things pronounced as they are ALWAYS wrong. But my favorite is still Fox and BDA proclaiming that HD DVD would be dead by last February. :)
domerdel @ Sep 14th 2007 5:20PM
Simba:
Thank you!!!
Dave @ Sep 14th 2007 5:56PM
Actually, you're the idiot.
"As of September 2007 40% of Blu-ray titles use the 50 GB disc and 60% use the 25 GB disc[52] while almost all HD DVD movies are in the 30 GB dual layer format.[53]"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc
Kevin Murphy @ Sep 14th 2007 9:33PM
Could you post a link for each of those?
joe @ Sep 14th 2007 5:15PM
In relation to the format war he is right. Any 51 gb Hd-dvd's would not play on any existing or announced HD-DVD hardware.
It would be the same as Bluray releasing a 200gb BD. Maybe future computer storage could use it but, for movies it would be pure bunk.
Mike @ Sep 14th 2007 10:30PM
Bunk is what you are spreading. The 51gig disk will work on all HD DVD platers being sold...that's both 2nd and 3rd generations...and i heard from someone at CEDIA that it will work on the 1st gen too.

domerdel @ Sep 14th 2007 6:09PM
Dave: this is not the case in the "idiot" statement lol. the point was that someone was saying it was "rare" to find BD50 gb discs while in fact there are several to choose from. BD25 was beginning of production, and BD50 is catching up. The number of BD50 and HD30 is very close.
SimbaDogg @ Sep 14th 2007 7:31PM
Mmm, thats funny dave, because 1) even a 60/40 split is a hell of a lot more than "rare". that was pretty much my point, obviously you're the only one that didn't pick up on that. 2) great place to quote for information...wikipedia....maybe i should go there right now and update the info. Never quote wikipedia for info...
Dave @ Sep 14th 2007 6:12PM
Ah. Sorry. Still, it's less than half.
Dave @ Sep 14th 2007 6:16PM
As far as them being close, how is "almost all" close to 40%?
domerdel @ Sep 14th 2007 6:18PM
less than half indeed, but numbers will climb over the 50% hill. And not to discredit the BD25 releases, the 40% covers a mass of box office hits:

Sure--reportedly...in the future. But maybe that's just a "publicity stunt".

Dave-
you've been derailed.
It's been shown that there are PLENTY of bd50 disks currently for sale. While 40% is not most is is also far from being rare.
You would expect most movies to be on 30gb HD-DVD since 15 gb just isn't enough for lightly compressed content. Having 60% of the bluray disk being 25 gb shows that 25gb is just fine for many applications right now, while 15 gb is not. Extra content and longer movies to follow on bigger disks.

What a load of sh*t, if a movie wont fit on one disc, use 2, I mean WTF, who cares
SimbaDogg @ Sep 14th 2007 10:21PM

Someone buy Frank Simonis another drink.

@Joe:
It's believed that many of the Toshiba players can be updated to use the 51GB disks. Maybe not the 1st gen or the xbox thing. It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue.
Tim @ Sep 14th 2007 9:47PM
It does seem odd that HD DVD constantly said that the higher storage wouldn't matter but now all of a sudden they have a higher storage disc.
But really, a publicity stunt done by a company that is trying to win a format war? No way! That never happens.
Rob @ Sep 14th 2007 10:17PM
51GB disc??? Maybe they can put all the decent Universal and Paramount movies all on one disc then.
mike @ Sep 14th 2007 10:41PM
@Rob
And maybe sony can fit the entire collection of good sony studio movies on 1 dual layered Blu-ray disk.
Seriously your comment is retarded, thus your retarded
Mike @ Sep 14th 2007 11:12PM
HD DVD has been working on a triple layer disc since before the 1st generation started selling so storage has never been an issue as HD DVD knew the TL disc was going to come out.
The fact the 51 gig discs are easier to read then the 45gig disc was a bonus.
Neg2LED @ Sep 15th 2007 12:05AM
what a twit.
Xyzzy @ Sep 15th 2007 10:51AM
Obviously this was done as a talking point. When your competitor keeps saying, "We have more storage capability," you need to be able to counteract that regardless of whether it's actually needed or not (and I maintain that King Kong proves you don't).
If you want publicity stunts, Sony and friends are the experts. "Blu-Ray has won!" "HD DVD will be dead by February!" "BD players are outselling HD DVD player 15:1!!!" "We'll have interactive content soon!!!!*" (* said in what, 2006?)
Sean @ Sep 15th 2007 11:22AM
Ok, so here it is, Toshiba said this: All players will be able to read the HD-51 disc via Firmware update. The discs will be on the streets before years end.
Here is what we DONT know and should sit back and watch:
How hard or expensive is it to make the disc?
What studios who know how to make a good HD-DVD(Warner/Universal) will really care to use it since they get outstanding results as is from an HD-30?
And Also, Robocop is BD-25/MPEG-2, this has been confirmed (Was postponed form earlier just like Hills Have Eyes 2, so they could add BD+)

Regarding the specs of robocop
"specs released by the studio indicate a brand new high-def transfer for the title's October 9th Blu-ray bow. Apparently minted from a cleaned up version of the film's unrated cut, MGM says the upcoming BD-25 single-layer release will feature 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, as well as a new DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround track."

So tell me again where it has been confirmed as Mpeg2?

You Engadget guys may want to take a look at this:

Well, heck, all of Blu-ray is still a "preliminary specification." What's your point?
