HD syndication expanding with Two and a Half Men
Now that HD has been around for some time, we're seeing more and more reruns of HD shows (the industry calls reruns syndication). Just because a show wasn't originally presented in HD doesn't mean it can't be syndicated in HD, as we've seen with Seinfeld and more recently Star Trek: Enterprise. Unfortunately for local broadcast stations and HD fans everywhere, additional equipment is needed to syndicate in HD. This is above and beyond what they've already acquired to pass on the network HD feed or even produce their own HD. So, just because the show is syndicated in HD, doesn't mean you'll actually be able to enjoy it. Now we can add Two and a Half Men to the short list of syndicated HD shows, that you may or may not have access to.

Of the 3 mentioned 2&1/2 men is the only syndicated rerun I've ever seen in HD, BTW Comcast/DC

Our local NBC affiliate (KSHB) in Kansas City has the ability to broadcast syndicated shows in HD. They already broadcast Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune in HD. Looks great. I guess the added equipment has to do with their ability to store the HD video and splice local commercials into them. Just a guess.

the two shows mentioned is a different beast the joy of this event is that this is a syndicated rerun not first run like Jeopardy and WOF

No - I'm not surprised you don't know the difference between reruns and syndication.
Ben @ Sep 12th 2007 2:17PM
I know the difference, just didn't explain it well here. My point was that reruns of Two and a Half Men is syndicated.
I see your point, as many syndicated shows are not reruns.

When it comes to the station readiness in terms of deployment, is there a difference between first run syndication and rerun syndication. I thought both involved downloading programs to a local storage and then splicing in local ads and airing them.

Is it true 16:9 with extra content (from a source recording), or do they somehow increase resolution and change shape but the amount of content is the same?
Ben @ Sep 13th 2007 2:56PM
Two and a Half Men was originally produced in HD, so there is no conversion necessary.
As for other shows, Jeopardy and WOF are produced in HD, Enterprise was filmed so they made it HD the same way movies are converted. Seinfeld was remastered and especially difficult because although it was originally filmed, it was edited with video. So they had to go back to the source and then re-edit, but it's still presented in 4:3.
