Sure you can still hook up an OTA to your TV, but not to the receiver. If there was an OTA input in the receiver you would be able to record the OTA program while simultanously recording up to two other dvr events, along with the OTA broadcast.

pnzrfckr

Comments on DirecTV's HR21 pro gets official

We'll have to see how big the backlash is for OTA capability. As I recall, the HR-20 while including a jack and being wired for OTA originally, is not currently capable of receiving OTA either. Since I have my locals rebroadcast from DTV anyway, I've not taken the time or made the investment yet to add OTA to my system so I can't actually verify that however I do recall finding that puzzling when I read that info in the manual when I set my system up.

You have to remember, for DTV, OTA is their competition just like cable and Dish. While it may not make sense to the consumer, I can't say I'm completely surprised at their decision to control what goes through their boxes. It isn't going to make them any money to add OTA to their boxes and the eventual cost to them would definitely be measurable. So, this is what we get instead. I'm just glad I'm in an area where I can get my locals (at least everyone but freakin' NBC! What the hell is up with THAT??!??) so I don't have to deal with the extra hassle of an additional HD receiver.

Michael

Comments on DirecTV's HR21 pro gets official

The HR20 does currently offer OTA tuning and recording.

hilmar2k

Comments on DirecTV's HR21 pro gets official

It still won't have the TiVO interface, Season Pass, home networking, and other great TiVO features that were lost when DirecTV severed ties with TiVO.

If it's anything like the HR20 the fonts will be too small, the interface will still be clunky and confusing, it will need to be rebooted once a week, and it's all done so can squeeze every last dollar out of it by stealing Tivo's concept wihtout having to pay a license.

A Hyundai and a Ferarri are both cars that take you from one place to another. A DVR and TiVO both allow you to timeshift recordings and pause live TV. I'll still take the Ferarri and TiVO anyday.

Kyle McGee

Comments on DirecTV's HR21 pro gets official

Wow, I just had the new DirecTV HR21 installed… in summary, what a piece of poor engineering. Extremely disappointing! We can’t switch back and forth between tuners, can have an automatic “wish list”, no suggestions, every time I use thesystem I realize something else that I hate about the system. It is a 10 year step in the wrong direction from what I LOVED about Tivo. Don’t even get me started with my opinion on the clumsy remote… what ergonomic wiz designed this thing? I am returning the whole system and going back to my Tivo with less HD channels. What good is HD if you have to fight to watch it? Instead of convincing friends to go DirecTv and Tivo, I will tell them to stay away? Stay very away!

Pat B

Comments on DirecTV's HR21 pro gets official

The lack of an OTA input on the HR21 is what is keeping me from getting this. DirectTV still does not carry my PBS stations in HD(I get 3 different ones that carry a total of up to 10 digital/HD stations OTA), so if I pay for the HR21 DVR I will lose the ability to see my PBS stations in high def. due to lack of the OTA input.

I tried to get DirectTV to give me an HR20, but it became a big hassel for them to find one (installers showed up at my house twice with the HR21 sans OTA). After hours of frustration, I decided to forget the DVR upgrade and stay with what I had (standard HD receiver with OTA input). Maybe if enough folks call Direct TV and ask for OTA capability, the next model (HR22?)will have the OTA input.

Mike
