Ratatouille joins Cars for November 6th Blu-ray release
Those already saving up their $34.99 for Disney's Cars may now be inclined to pinch those pennies a bit harder, as it looks like Ratatouille will be landing on store shelves the very same day. Sure, this seems like a shameless attempt to get early-bird holiday shoppers (and grown-ups with youngsters in tow) to pick up twice the amount of Blu-ray films they were initially planning to come November 6th, but we won't be surprised if the scheme works out quite well. No word just yet on what kinds of rat-infested extras we'll see on the BD release, but we're keepin' our ears, er, nose to the ground.

wonder if this means a week later it shows up on the xbox marketplace like most of the other disney flicks.

Do you guys normally cover HD media release announcements? If so, do you cover every title or just those you think are worthwhile?
Andy @ Aug 24th 2007 12:34PM
Umm, I've known this for about 2 weeks now.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the Pixar Shorts Collection also coming out that day. 3 Pixar releases in one day!

$34.99?
Jeezus...isn't that a bit steep?
How $19.99. They would sell double.
But what do I know?
Andy @ Aug 24th 2007 1:34PM
$34.99 is MSRP. You are likely to find it for $25 or cheaper
russ99 @ Aug 24th 2007 2:06PM
It's way too common for companies to overcharge us for anything HD nowadays.
Maybe after X-mas the prices for players and software will drop - a little.

Come on now, some of you guys still haven't figured out the difference between list price and the price that the store might put on it? Media companies are always going to put the list price on their press releases and such. What you pay at Best Buy, Walmart or Amazon will usually be considerably cheaper. I think this is an extreme example, but Amazon shows the list price of Casino Royale on BluRay as $38.99. They offer it for $22. 300 Blu-Ray: List $34.99, Sell $23.95. $300 HD-DVD/DVD Combo lists for $39.99, but sells for $27.95. I'll pick a Disney Blu-Ray title to make it a better comparison, a Pirates of the Carribean disc, list is $34.99, Amazon's price is $23.95.
The discount varies by retailer, so don't yell at me for having the "wrong" price. It's fairly safe to say that you should be able to find the Pixar movies at several retailers for $25.
Anyway, list price is just a point of reference, it's not the price that everyone is going to pay.

Sorry, double post. For some reason, my first post didn't show up at all and only showed up when I reposted it.

So Disney isn't releasing anything on HD-DVD?
MegaZone @ Aug 24th 2007 8:29PM
No - Disney is very firmly in the BD camp. They're spending big money doing "Disney's Magical Blu-ray Tour" going to malls around the country to promote Blu-ray, and they've repeatedly stated their disdain for HD DVD and love of BD.
joe @ Aug 24th 2007 5:09PM
Navstar-
Disney is unlikey to release anything on HD-DVD. I believe that they are a member of the BD alliance as opposed to an affiliated studio. That means most likely there is no contract of exclusivity but they stand to make a lot of money if BD makes it.
I think at this point everyone who is BD only actually owns part of it.
If you have a HD-DVD player you can check for international releases to see if it's released in another nation.
MegaZone @ Aug 24th 2007 8:31PM
"I think at this point everyone who is BD only actually owns part of it."
Not true - there are smaller studios like Funimation who are BD-only and don't have any stake in it. I'm not sure that Fox actually has a stake in BD.
As for other countries. Disney controls their releases world-wide, so they're BD everywhere they get released.
Xyzzy @ Aug 24th 2007 8:57PM
"and they've repeatedly stated their disdain for HD DVD and love of BD"
And yet they're the ones that helped develop HDi...
Ian @ Aug 25th 2007 3:34AM
You might want to not look at this then. :)

Wow - I admit, I'm surprised to see that. I see they sell it on both HD DVD and BD: http://www.dvd-store.it/Copertine/BR_unponteperterabithia_MHE.jpeg http://www.dvd-store.it/Copertine/hd_unponteperterhabitia.jpg

You know, I'm surprised to think that anyone would spend the extra bucks for HD animation. Animated films are absolutely the easiest source material to reproduce by either a DVD or TV because of the artificially generated images. I'm completely happy to go with the traditional DVD release and view my HD-DVD upconverted picture. With the near HD upconversion, I can view any Disney or Pixar animated film I choose at nearly the same picture quality as live action HD source. Add that I already OWN most of these titles on DVD and I've saved a ton of cash.
Farenhyt @ Aug 25th 2007 9:11AM
Yeah, ur saying that coz u 'cant' watch it in HD.
HD animation if anything looks the best in HD with HD sound and HD picture...
Hooray for Disney Pixar!
Michael @ Aug 25th 2007 12:51PM
No, you're missing my point entirely.
I'm saying that first of all, ALL CGI effects (including animated films such as those Disney or Pixar produces) are entirely digital effects to begin with. The resolution provided with an upconverted HD-DVD player is virtually identical to that of an HD source. I am running all my audio in pure digital as well so there is also ZERO difference between a traditional DVD and the HD version. Plus, I already own each of these titles (with the exception of Ratatouille of course) so I'm saving the $25-30 additional cost just to duplicate something I already own. THAT was the point I was trying to make. I simply see very little reason to spend so much to get so little when I can spend the same money on films where it will make much more of an impact to go with the HD version instead.
I am not singling out these BD titles simply because they are BD. If this were a case of the same titles on HD-DVD my feelings would be exactly the same. I have limited entertainment dollars to spend just like everyone else. I'm not going to spend my hard earned monies where I'm not going to get the best return on my investment.
Ian @ Aug 25th 2007 2:21PM
Check out "Happy Feet" on HD DVD. It's a combo disc with the standard DVD on the other side of the disc.
Watch the HD DVD side. Then watch the DVD side.
Then tell me there's not a HUGE difference!
vfx artist @ Aug 26th 2007 5:13AM
Upconverted CGI dvd isnt the same as the HD source. The CGI is usually rendered at a high resolution for the theatre. It is then scaled down to dvd resolution where it looses alot of the high details. You cannot get those details back by upconverting. Take any picture and down size it. It wont look the same when you try to scale it back up.
Josh Poulson @ Aug 28th 2007 3:41PM
Are you folks are forgetting that Pixar has a long tradition of re-rendering its movies for distribution? The special edition of Bugs Life (iirc) had a "extra" story about how they re-rendered for DVD resolution and home aspect ratios. They will likely re-render Cars and the rest at 1080/24p. It should be a phenom!
