Cox deploys SDV solution in Virginia, hopes to expand HD offerings
Those following the inner workings of Cox Communications ought not be too terribly surprised here, but the company has reportedly selected BigBand Networks to provide a switched digital video solution. Better still, the cable operator also announced that it has "begun to deploy the solution in its Northern Virginia market." James Kelso, vice president of video engineering for Cox, was quoted as saying that "BigBand's SDV solution gives us the ability to dramatically expand programming -- particularly high-definition channels -- at a low cost-per-subscriber." Regrettably, there's no mention of what other locales can look forward to SDV next, and while Cox doesn't exactly say what new HD channels we can expect to see utilizing this newfound bandwidth, we'll be waiting in tense anticipation.[Via MultiChannel]

I'm a student in Gainesville and I've been noticing a significant increase in Cox vans in our area installing lots of new nodes and refreshing old nodes.
Maybe I'm being optimistic but perhaps Cox is preparing to deploy SDV in the Gainesville network as well. We have rather sparse HD offerings here.

Yeah they most likely will/are.. SDV requires smaller nodes, so splittin is required.. Usually done in late to early hours.. 2-4 am or so..

Looking forward to SDV? If it kills my QAM channels I am NOT looking forward to it. I love my HDHomeRun. TW has started upgrading my area in Dallas starting today (cable is already down) so I'm extremely curious what the result will be. At least I can get a better cable box and more channels, but my HDHR+WMCE might become useless.

I hope that the SDV makes it to Cox in New Orleans. Since hurricane Katrina we have become around 3rd or 4th city on the list for Cox to test their latest and greatest offerings. I would love to have more national HD channels delivered as I feel there are a bunch of good national HD programming that I'm currently missing out on.

Ah, something CableCard uses could care less about.
DJM @ Aug 26th 2007 9:12PM
Maybe a cablecard user might not care about it unless they have a Tivo Series 3 or TivoHD. Then those boxes wouldn't be able to get the new channels despite having a card since Tivo hasn't set those up to handle SDV.
