No. Now, the playing field has been evened out somewhat, and everyone is acting like milk starved 4 month olds.

And what does he mean by "best formats available"? Has he compared HDDVD to Blu-ray side-by-side with identical titles? Does he not know that in most cases, they look and sound identical, but whenever there's a difference, HDDVD comes out looking better?

Someone pull out a t!t for Michael bay to suck on. And while we're at it, someone pull out another one for you engadget hd guys. Your anti HDDVD slant is becoming more and more obvious. I'm sorry, but you have no idea what you're talking about!

Spielberg's Universal titles will never be seen on Blu-ray. I'm no expert but if Blu-ray has more space for extras then that what Lucas will use. What Star Wars fan is going to want a watered down version of Star Wars in HD?"

Redd, since when does Lucas pack his DVDs with extras? Last time I checked, both Spielberg and Lucas tend to leave off the extras and just put them on a separate disc. This was the case with both Indiana Jones and Star Wars and I expect it will be much the same for any HD versions that come out. I'm also confused about what you mean about getting a watered down version of Star Wars when it comes out in HD. We've already got about a dozen editions out now and with the exception of the new effects that were added and the inclusion of one or two additional scenes, there isn't much else that CAN come out. The room that either HD format provides is waaaaaaayyy more than is needed for a non-watered down version. If anything, I'm more concerned about the lame ass package itself than the ability of the disc to reproduce the video quality of the films.

Honestly, I don't think some of you will be happy until you see the sticks and strings used to hold up and move the models when the original films were made. Now THAT would be HIGH DEFINITION!

http://www.myspace.com/scoobarama

Michael

Comments on Michael Bay responds to Paramount's abandonment of Blu-ray: "No Transformers 2 for me!"

Spielberg only has that power for the movies he directed and not produced, Michael Bay is probably only mad because his contract probably has him making money on royalties. This was a business move for Paramount and Dreamworks. Make some money with the exclusive deal and if HDDVD falls through simply start making blu ray again, its still big money for them. This war is so childish, and looks as though we will be having a SACD, DVD audio niche market. Despite how much I love HD the two formats have been complete failures for me, HDDVD/DVD combo discs are probably the best route in my opinion, the price needs to come down for them, but with combos it doesnt matter if your hd or sd your not left out in the cold. Consumers shouldnt have to upgrade there little portable dvd players, or car players, all of America doesnt have HDTV and those who do are unlikely to have every tv in there house in HD. Where DVD added not only better picture and audio, but the holy grail of features compared to a VHS, such as no rewind man I still remebmer the stickers "be kind, please rewind" anyways the features of the new hd formats arent all that groundbreaking and again are mostly niche type features.
I wont lie I do prefer HDDVD over Blu Ray, but I own both so its not a big deal. Blu Ray though just messes with us customers and just keeps saying PS3, millions of players, how about a good game for my PS3 I havent bought a single game since Resistence, worse console ever in terms of gaming. Even more after a year its still not a complete format, how do you think that will make people feel when new discs could fail to work in old players, even if its a firware update, a non techie consumer wouldnt even know what a firmware update is.
So the big question still out there, what does Warner do, if they go exclusive you can pretty much count out the other guy, they are just too big as a movie studio, and with Universal, Paramount and Warner pretty much making the top three and fox has done nothing in months except talk. Heres to hoping that Warner goes HDDVD and Sony cant start concentrating on making some games for my $600 "gaming" console.

Juice

Comments on Michael Bay responds to Paramount's abandonment of Blu-ray: "No Transformers 2 for me!"

Just so everyone knows, just because the Speilberg title are format neutral, deosnt mean you will see them on Blu Ray, Paramount may play dirty and simply not release any of them in HD. Using with math? The majority of studios still favor Blu-ray. If you start pulling all the sub-imprints and little studios out for HD DVD, then you need to do the same for BD - including studios like Funimation which is BD. Either way you cut it - just majors or all studios, BD has more backing. The only way you get parity is to include non-majors on HD DVD's side and only majors on BD's side.

The only reason Paramount and DreamWorks did this is that they were paid off - $150 million from the HD DVD camp for 18 months exclusivity. And you know that if the BD camp did the same thing - paid off Warner, Paramount, or Universal to go BD - you'd be screaming bloody murder about being 'unfair'. But it is fine when your side does it, right?

What's the the numbers getting lower every time you post? Now it is $150-$199? The current low-end HD DVD player is $299. The 360 drive is $180. There were rumors early in the year of some $199 Chinese HD DVD player - but those rumors were debunked. So far there has been no real sign of any players that cheap from either camp. Now, I actually do expect to see Toshiba cut prices for the holidays and they'll probably push the low end down to $199. However, Sony is also certain to cut prices and I won't be surprised if they match Toshiba, though they may only cut down to $299. It depends on how aggressive both camps get. But there is a lot more money being poured into marketing BD this year.

Blu-rays is not going away, period. You have to be an idiot to think that's even possible. There are only two possible outcomes of this war:
1. BD wins, HD DVD goes away.
2. Stalemate. Both formats survive, more combo players appear.

Sony is not going to support HD DVD, and they have the media to back it up. Disney and Fox (and MGM by extension) are *extremely* unlikely to back it, as both have made strong negative comments about HD DVD and strong positive comments about BD.

There is no logical reason to believe that yesterday's announcement turned the tied or that BD will fade away because of this. BD continues to outsell HD DVD 2:1 in the US, 3:1 globally. The Paramount switch may cut into that ratio - but even a 50:50 split, unlikely, isn't going to kill either format. And it would take a lot more to put HD DVD into the sales lead.

MegaZone

Comments on Michael Bay responds to Paramount's abandonment of Blu-ray: "No Transformers 2 for me!"

Good thing. The consumer market is voting with their dollars, and the proof is Blu-ray movie sales making up two thirds of ALL SALES since the inception of both formats. The negligible standalone sales edge that Toshiba had has been eroding, not increasing (they cut their sales forecasts 44% because sales were decreasing). And it's amusing to watch Blu-ray idiots get mad at something that doesn't even weigh on the outcome. It's not going to change shit, it merely prolongs a dying format.

hemmy

Comments on Michael Bay responds to Paramount's abandonment of Blu-ray: "No Transformers 2 for me!"

HEMMY, You are so WRONG.

Combined HD DVD and BLU RAY disc sales are 3.7 million with BLU having
2.2 million and HD DVD having 1.5 million.
