I'm sick of it since I have the high def tv, the sat receiver and home theater set up. Every set-back brings "It isn't over yet!" responses - but they just keep adding up.

You just don't see retailers, studios, etc, going HD DVD exclusive. But it seems like every week another retailer goes Blu - Woolworth's in the UK is reportedly going exclusively BD too. Blockbuster announcement? Whoopty doo! So I'll be able to rent a blu-ray movie at blockbuster. I'm shakin', especially when you realize that MOST people are renting online these days and they just return the titles to Blockbuter stores, that's what I do and everyone I know does the same. Oh, wait, Blockbuster still offers HD DVD online for rent. Hm, well not so Blu-Ray exclusive now is it. Blu-Ray is PAYING all these companies, just like they paid Target to promote that one BD player, get that in your thick head. That's WHAT RETAILERS do. These people don't stock items, they RENT OUT shelf space.

So more announcements, let's see. Maybe HD DVD group should be fearing that most Blu-Ray exlusive supporters are now getting ready or have released hybrid players supporting HD DVD? OH WAIT, that's a GREAT thing for HD DVD. Or maybe that XBox add-on is now $179 and you can get standalone HD DVD for below $200 with 5 free movies? OH WAIT, that's another great thing for HD DVD and consumers.

You do REALIZE that CONSUMERS BUY those products right. Even if Target for example,or even Walmart by SOME miracle WENT Blu-Ray ONLY (which I doubt WILL EVER happen, Blu-Ray just can't give them competitive price) there would be plenty others stores selling HD DVD players HALF the price of those being sold at BD exclusive retailers. So you know what would happen then, the same that happens with all other Chinese electronics for example, people would find ways or alternate places to buy those HD DVD players at $100-$150 or whatever they will cost by Christmas and these stores would LOSE.

Sweet spot for HD DVD players IS

Nfinity

Comments on Target isn't Blu-ray exclusive at all, but BJ's Wholesale might be

Nfinity -

So I agree with you, HD-DVD is going down and its going down hard! whhhhWhat! Toshiba did a test with that promotion at Value Electonics (their official distributor) and guess what almost a 1000 units (stores WHOLE inventory at that moment) dissapeared in 1 DAY. This is why it's now back to $249. It was just a test to see how people would react and be rest assured, Toshiba's players will be AT WORST $199 for holiday season. It took time for folks to adopt DVD, and the "sweet spot" wasn't even $200.

This is a niche market right now, and many that want that capability are getting through the PS3. Perhaps only a low percentage of PS3 users watch as many movies on it as I do, but that low percentage is enough to destroy HD-DVD stand-alone sales.

There aren't enough movies, on either format, to interest your average citizen. And by the time there is, one format will be dead. I believe that HD-DVD will be the buried format this time around.

PS The 1000 sales in one day really isn't all that impressive. Do HD-DVD and Blu-ray provide the same product (more or less). 1080p and Lossless audio on both and nearly 95% of movies fit on 1 disc for either format. In essence they are the same product. Taking movie studio support aside, (more on this later) HD-DVD is the better product for the sole reason that it provides the same service/product but its quite a bit cheaper. Hopefully most consumers will come to realize this.

As for the stupid studio support... Sony has their hand into too many cookie jars. They own the format, many of the movie studios, producing most of the players, etc... Sony is playing a dirty game of trying to force the format by creating format exclusive content. HD-DVD did the same you same? Well, the question is who started first, if it was toshiba, shame on them and they just might learn their lesson (even though its 1 studio). If it was Sony, I hope they burn in Hell and the rest of the company fed to the dogs. This is just as dirty as the healthcare companies... Company A makes the people pay less money but they can't get the good doctors because Company B pays them to not treat sick people so these sick people have to go to Company B and pay higher premium costs. Anyone see anything wrong with this? I hope the EU slaps Sony with anti-trust acts because they certainly deserve it.

Why do we hate Sony? Sony has been playing dirty all the time and they never seem to learn their lesson... Customers are dead last on Sony's priority list when it comes to big name products. More DRM when customers want less, Illegal software, region coding when we all know its a horrible Idea, and the list goes on. The world would be a better place without Sony not to mention HD-DVD and BD give the same service but HD-DVD is cheaper and hence the better product.

Won't but it just because its cheaper? Well then, you my friend are the victim of the dirty games sony plays just to keep control because apperently studio exclusivity is why most people choose BD and in my opinion that is wrong.

I say all studios go neutral now and lets see who comes out on top. That's better customer service than I've ever received from ANY company for ANY piece of electronics, with the exception of Apple. They too provide "live" downloadable firmware updates as needed in a timely manner. But I digress. I think the assessment on the price of media is equaly important. For those who buy and build a movie collection, they want each title to cost $20 or less. BD makers should consider that very carefully, on both their players AND the content they sell for them if they want to compete with HD DVD.
