This might be a dumb question but why would I buy this if I could score the Comcast Tivo box for merely a rental price?

Better hardware. OTA tuners. The need to pay TiVo money each month?

OK, maybe not the last one. TiVo's insistence on the fee-based business model will keep them a tiny player forever. But then, TiVo's engineering has had about 70 IQ points on TiVo management for a long time now.
