This is dual-tuner. Does your Sony have broadband content like TiVoCast and Amazon Unbox? No. Does it have all of the features of TiVo as a DVR - Season Passes and Wishlists, and two weeks of Guide data? No. Does it rely on an EPG that isn't available in all areas? Yes. Does it offer music and photo functionality, 3rd party apps like HME, etc? No. In fact, does it even have a network connection? No. Does it have eSATA for storage expansion? No. Can you replace/expand the internal drive? No.

Yeah, a real big joke. However those are the things I actually don't use. I have my Mac for that (hooked up to my HDTV). It will do a better job than the Tivo. However, my biggest gripe with the Tivo is the monthly fee. Just because this company could not figure out how to make money any other way, they are basically shafting people. I have a pair of Toshiba Tivo-DVD player combos. Though they do not record DVD's, allow one to use season passes and only have a 3 day program schedule, the price is right. After the cost of the machine, my monthly expense is $0, with what Tivo calls "basic service". Now, of course, if we want all the bells and whistles, Tivo will be happy to upgrade us for the going monthly fee. Personally, however, we are happy with using this as a "digital VCR". Oh, and the DVD player makes the unit even more attractive.

I have not yet heard, but am hoping, that a third party will offer a series 3 with DVD player.

davidb4775
