TiVo Series 3 Lite pics and specs revealed
Falling right in line with the news TiVo CEO Tom Rogers hinted at back in March, the struggling company is readying the highly anticipated HD Series 3 "Lite," which will target a much wider range of consumer with a price point of around $299. Some tenacious (and possibly connected) fans posted specs and pics on the TiVo Community forums, much to the delight of broke DVR users across the globe. The new model will axe the OLED display and THX certification, and swap the deluxe remote for a standard model, but the specs remain fairly close otherwise. Here's a geeked-out rundown to keep everyone psyched: BCM740x DVR CPU with integrated MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 decoders, 1x dual MPEG-2 encoder, 2x Samsung S5H1411-based tuners, 128Mb DDR SDRAM, and a 160Gb SATA HD (down from the Series 3's 250GB drive). All in all, a pretty attractive package when you don't have a lot of cash to burn.

You really ought to label this as a rumor. A posting on a fan board is not really a source, and if you look at the pics they are so blurry that they could easily have been photoshoped.

Kyle,
Google "TCD652160" and you will find more information cached at some retailers where Tivo recently had the information removed. Even Amazon still has pictures of the new model on their site.

Will this have the same montly fee, and what is the current montly fee?

About time someone else found this - I found it on July 4th, but agreed not to post about it. ;-) http://www.tivolovers.com/2007/07/17/more-tivo-series3-lite-leaks/
I'd take those tech specs with a grain of salt, but the general details seem accurate based on the various pages in Google's cache and the photos.
Horngreen - I'd expect it to use the same subscriptions as all the other TiVo units, and the pricing is on TiVo's website. $16.95, $14.95, or $12.95/month for 1-, 2-, and 3-year commitments, or $179, $299, or $299 for 1-, 2-, and 3-years pre-paid. And yes, 2- and 3-year plans are currently the same price, so you've be a moron to buy 2-years. ;-) (3-years is normally $349 but is on semi-permanent special it seems.)

I'm ready to welcome TiVo back into my life after giving up my series 1 for blasted comcast hd tuner.. :(

Does this have the same Sized Hard Drive as the regular HD Tivo 3?
MegaZone @ Jul 17th 2007 11:32PM
No - original S3 is 250GB, this one looks to be 160GB.
Siva @ Jul 17th 2007 9:03PM
In this fast moving tech world, I am still amazed at the price this thing costs since I paid $499 for my Sony DHG-HDD250 (250GB HD) in November 2005. I don't pay any monthly fees. I use OTA-HD so my monthly bill is $0. There is no way I am giving that up to get into a monthly fee program!! What a joke!
MegaZone @ Jul 17th 2007 11:38PM
Your Sony is single-tuner, isn't it? This is dual-tuner. Does your Sony have broadband content like TiVoCast and Amazon Unbox? No. Does it have all of the features of TiVo as a DVR - Season Passes and Wishlists, and two weeks of Guide data? No. Does it rely on an EPG that isn't available in all areas? Yes. Does it offer music and photo functionality, 3rd party apps like HME, etc? No. In fact, does it even have a network connection? No. Does it have eSATA for storage expansion? No. Can you replace/expand the internal drive? No.
Yeah, a real big joke. Oh, you mean the TiVo. ;-)

All of this info is legit - I talked to a TiVo rep about it a few days ago.
Its slated to come out the 24th of August.
Siva @ Jul 18th 2007 12:55AM
Yes agree with all your points about the deficiencies of the Sony. However those are the things I actually don't use. I have my Mac for that (hooked up to my HDTV). It will do a better job than the Tivo. However, my biggest gripe with the Tivo is the monthly fee. Just because this company could not figure out how to make money any other way, they are basically shafting people. If they had become just a hardware company, it would have been better.
MegaZone @ Jul 18th 2007 1:20AM
The best deal is pre-paid. $299 for 3-years - no monthly fee and the lowest cost per month broken down.
Reid Sorenson @ Jul 18th 2007 6:06PM
Do the tuners handle Clear QAM?
MegaZone @ Jul 18th 2007 6:37PM
Yes and no - the tuners handle Clear QAM, but there is no channel mapping without CableCARD, and hence no guide data. So you can only use Clear QAM channels by time and channel.

I agree with Siva. I have a pair of Toshiba Tivo-DVD player combos. Though they do not record DVD's, allow one to use season passes and only have a 3 day program schedule, the price is right. After the cost of the machine, my monthly expense is $0, with what Tivo calls "basic service". Now, of course, if we want all the bells and whistles, Tivo will be happy to upgrade us for the going monthly fee. Personally, however, we are happy with using this as a "digital VCR". Oh, and the DVD player makes the unit even more attractive.
I have not yet heard, but am hoping, that a third party will offer a series 3 with DVD player.
