Yes, a lot of people use it to watch Blu-ray movies, but most don't. If each and every PS3 was used as a standalone BD-player, then BD should have sold a heck of a lot more discs than they do.

Like Sony says - when you're counting the PS3, BD has a 19:1 advantage on HD DVD, but they're "only" outselling HD DVD 2:1 on discs. So either BD owners don't buy movies, or most PS3 owners are only using their console for playing games.

Assuming HD DVD and BD-player owners buys the same number of movies (on average), Sony's numbers suggests that only 9% of PS3 owners use it for movies.

Trond M

Comments on

even if only 9% of PS3 users are using it for movies, its software sales that it comes down to and if people are buying 2 blu-rays for every HD-DVD, that thats what relaly matters. because right now, most people dont care about HD movies, and the ones who bought hd-dvd players are obviously using them for hd-dvds, but the reason why blu-ray players are sold so much less is there actually are a number of people who just bought PS3 for blu-ray movies. and the 2:1 ratio shows that. and eventually the other 91% of PS3 owners are not gonna wanna go out and buy an HD-DVD player when they want HD movies, they are just gonna use what they already have.

sirpilf

Comments on

I have a PS3 and I don't have a Blu Ray disc in the house. I have a 61" DLP 1080p display and an HD DVR from Directv. I have so many HD movies on my DVR, I don't have time to watch them all. I might consider buying a BD movie if I really love the movie, but currently I haven't done so yet. I honestly don't even know if I can rent a BD movie from Netflix or Blockbuster, because I have no need when HBO and Showtime have so many great HD movies. On Blockbuster's site, they show about 270 Blu-ray DVDs but no HD DVDs. I admit, I'm starting to change my mind about renting Blu-ray DVDs, since some of them are complete seasons of good shows that haven't been broadcast in HD... also, I should mention that HBO and Showtime aren't the only HD channels showing great movies: HD Net Movies just showed Full Metal Jacket the other night! Even with the format war and the issues with HDMI, we are truly technologically blessed to live during the HD revolution. :D

Kevin G

Comments on

Indeed, the format war is about SOFTWARE, not hardware. Each promotional group (camp) wants to build an empire with their format. Counting the number of discs sold at this very early stage of development is analogous to counting 2x4's in the bed of a pickup truck that is heading towards the construction site for this empire.

The real driver is long term media sales and that is driven by stand-alone players. I say this because stand-alone players carry an attach rate that is about 11 times higher (5.5 / 0.5 = 11). Recent sales figures for PS3 are 80k units per month. HD-DVD needs to sell 80k/11=7300 units per month to offset the sale of new PS3s. To make headway HD-DVD needs to sell enough units to offset the PS3 (>7300) and offset standalone BD players (unknown #). As BD and HD-DVD stand-alone sales continue to rise, the effect of PS3 will continue to diminish.

In a nutshell, the winner will be determined by who gets better penetration into the stand-alone player market. Toshiba has the lead on that front, but the Blu-Ray camp is smartly driving down player prices before HD-DVD can overcome the PS3 effect.

The PS3 was a good move on Sony's part with regard to winning the format war, but they are paying dearly for it on the gaming console market.

HDMike

Comments on

It's interesting how hd dvd say's they sell more STAND ALONE PLAYERS not including xbox 360 add-on and blu-ray includes the ps3.
