Samsung BD-UP5000 dual format player to arrive in October
In a statement during Germany's IFA conference, Samsung promised to release its dual format player in October or November; and while there's no firm price yet, estimates are that it will cost about 400 euro ($544) more than their standard Blu-ray player. We assume that it'll be Blu-ray's first BD profile 1.1 player and at the same time HD DVD will get another stand-alone player from someone other than Toshiba -- this one actually supports HDi. While we seriously doubt a dual format player will help either side become the dominate format, it will help get some people down off the fence so they can start enjoying the best HD quality their TV has to offer.[Via Pocket-lint]

$544 more than their standard Blu-ray player? It will likely take a bit of price reduction to get the middle class masses off the fence. I would jump on a sub $500 dual format device or a sub $300 single format device.
You would think there should be some financial incentive to the consumer to buy a dual format device. If the sum of the parts cost more than parts, what good is that?

Why do people always bite on the irrelevant euro/dollar comparisons?
That would only apply if you order the thing overseas and had it shipped here (would the br part even have the right region then?) Regardless, the pricing is usually more 1:1 or cheaper for tech, cars, etc. on the US side of the pond.
a 15k euro car over there will probably be 15k bucks here. Now I'm guessing that player will be 900-1000 bucks, since the LG one was just a tad higher when it came out. With coming price reductions, probably around 800 bucks, though the sony people might be pissed that it's cheaper than their high end, and about equal to HD's high end.

Ben, you gotta stop with the "While.... but...." sentence construction. You use it in EVERY. FREAKING. POST. It's driving me nuts.

You're right, the scary part is many times I put it in twice and catch it before it goes live. I need to find a good alternative.

Just reverse the order of the clauses and say
"....., although...."
e.g.,
The dual format player may help get some people down off the fence so they can start enjoying the best HD quality their TV has to offer, although we seriously doubt it will help either side become the dominate format.
Also, "dominate" (v.) should be "dominant" (adj.)
