If Sony wins this war and there is no HD DVD, there is no choice for the consumer, it's blu ray or the high way and then you have an unhealthy monopoly. Who pays for this? The consumer. EVERY product needs healthy competition,it is so important for HD DVD to survive or we will all be held to ransom no matter which side you support. So to all you blu ray fanboys, get your heads out of your rear ends or we will all have to pay through the nose.
You've got to be kidding me right? Have you ever heard of beta-max. Two formats for the same media cannot co-exist. The only way we'll be paying out our rears is if we have to buy a HDDVD player and a blu-ray player if they both exist forever.
Did you ever have to pay out of your nose for DVD's? Cause last time I checked, DVD didn't have to compete with a similar format. You cannot consider formats a monopoly and competition with formats only hurt the consumer. ONE format is best for consumers because it eliminates the confusion of two formats and will be adopted quicker. The more people buy the format, the cheaper it becomes to manufacture, lowering prices. Economies of scale. DVD players and movies became cheaper and cheaper over time. When I first started buying DVD movies they were upwards of $30-$35. Now new releases go for around $15, and end up at $7 after about 2 months.
