Cause last time I checked, DVD didn't have to compete with a similar format.
You cannot consider formats a monopoly and competition with formats only hurt the consumer. ONE format is best for consumers because it eliminates the confusion of two formats and will be adopted quicker. The more people buy the format, the cheaper it becomes to manufacture, lowering prices.
Economies of scale. DVD players and movies became cheaper and cheaper over time. At least HD DVD studios are releasing movies *cough* Fox *cough* With the "massive studio support," BD still only has less than 19 more disks available (and the count doesn't include a lot of HD DVDs that are available such as the Bach one, and some other "destination" films. It also doesn't count the movies you can buy overseas, many of which are BD exclusive here, meaning HD DVD has MORE titles available right now).

As for cheaper players -- thanks for giving me a chuckle with your "not for long" comment. They're the only one's making HD DVD players now, including the 360 addon. Meanwhile, I can buy players from Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Pioneer, Sharp, and more. Many of those are now available for $500 or less. To an average consumer, it doesn't matter if it's $250 or $500, and even if they buy the players, HD DVD is actually losing market share for movies to BD as the year goes on. They've been outsold 2:1 for the year so far. GEM, in turn, forms the basis of most global digital television application standards, including Multimedia Home Platform ("DVB-MHP") for broadcast, satellite, and cable worldwide, OpenCable Application Platform ("OCAP") for North American cable, and Advanced Common Application Platform ("ACAP") for US broadcast. GEM is an ETSI standard; DVB-MHP is a DVB standard. All GEM-based standards are built on top of Java technology, invented by Sun Microsystems. Because BD-J, MHP, OCAP, and ACAP are all based on the Java platform, there is a high degree of content interoperability between these standards, making it easier, for example, for Blu-ray Disc content features to be made available on cable Video on Demand, or for interactive television content originally aired on broadcast television to be repackaged and made available on Blu-ray Disc."

And right now, Blu-ray is far ahead considering it came out of the Gate second.

"Through June, Blu-ray had sold about 1.8 million discs, compared with 1.3 million for HD DVD, according to consultancy Adams Media Research. Currently, about 105,000 homes have Blu-ray players, and about 150,000 have HD DVD players. An additional 1.5 million homes have PlayStation 3 devices, which also play Blu-ray movies, although fewer gamers are using the machines to play movies than had been hoped for.
