Blu-ray disc coatings starting to rot?
A thread over at the AVS Forums has highlighted a potential problem with the coating of Blu-ray discs, described by many as "disc rot" due to the mould-like spots that have made several owner's Blu-ray discs unplayable. The five page thread has reports from dozens of forum members, many of them discovering spots which can't be rubbed off on Blu-ray versions of "The Prestige." It's impossible to judge how widespread the problem is from a single forum thread, although it's not unheard of to see a product recall after a problem is discovered by users on a forum. It's also worth noting that for every user that has reported the spots, there's one or more people with discs that have no problem. If you've encountered the same issue, your best policy is to try and get a refund / replacement disc from the place where you originally bought it from. If enough people are reporting a problem, then retailers will be a much stronger voice than a bunch of consumers sounding off in the echo chamber that is "the internet."

Yikes. I hope the evening news does not do a story on this. It is just the type of thing to keep the masses away from Blu-Ray and potentially all HD products.

the can of worms are about to open

Somebody please comment on whether the DVD corruption issue has been addressed. Over 10% of the DVD movies I rent from NetFlix or Blockbuster have massive chunks of unplayable data on them. I even bought a new DVD player thinking it was me, and same thing. Friends see about the same rate of unplayable DVD's coming out of netflix.
How in the world can Blu-Ray and HD-DVD be MORE reliable than DVD when they have a much higher data density? If HD-DVD fixes the problem with media being unplayable (?!), I'm there.
Mojo_Yugen @ Jun 18th 2007 10:29AM
I'm not seeing anywhere near the problems you are having with DVDs. Some are damaged or scratched to the point of not being playable, but I'd say the in total about 1% of the discs I get from Netflix have problems of any kind. (I did use Blockbuster for a short time and they had a higher rate of damaged discs, but still not 10%.)
Supposedly the HD formats do have a better coating to minimize scratches. We'll see.
David @ Jun 19th 2007 9:37AM
Do you know what you're on about?
You're renting movies. Of course there'll be problems. Not every customer takes good care of the rented movies like you do.
And you're talking about DVD also. This is HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. I don't know if HD-DVDs have this problem, but it seems only this one movie does for the Blu-Ray discs. It's probably a faulty manufacture. Something messed up. It can happen on any disc.
So just because one company made a small mistake, you can't take it out on the whole format and every other company that has done it right. That's immature thinking.
Harrison Murchison @ Jun 16th 2007 8:10PM
Doesn't affect me...I buy only HD DVD ;)
will @ Jun 16th 2007 8:53PM
dosent affect me neither i buy hd dvds aswell
Invee @ Jun 16th 2007 9:13PM
You need to change your title because its deceiving! This seems to be an isolated problem to "THE PRESTIGE" BD ONLY!!!!!!
will @ Jun 16th 2007 9:34PM
blu ray is the future but they have disc thats starting to rot already it dosent matter if its on 1 title or two titles blu ray is the perfect format of the future bullshit
Liqwid @ Jun 17th 2007 12:27AM
I can import The Prestige from the UK in HD DVD, but I haven't watched the movie yet, so I'm holding off.
Alex @ Jun 16th 2007 11:45PM
if the future is rotting discs, you can keep it for yourself will.
HD DuD huh? lol
antler @ Jun 16th 2007 11:42PM
This FUD's been going on for a while. There are thousands of people who've bought the same titles and have no problems!
ckelly @ Jun 16th 2007 11:50PM
antler: Wouldn't at all be like Pirates of the Caribbean not playing on certain BluRay players would it? You act like BR doesn't have its own issues. I believe HD-DVD fixed their problems with playback, what about BR?
antler @ Jun 17th 2007 4:06AM
What u mention there with pirates just needed an update to BDJ and this was released in tandem with the movie!
freduk @ Jun 17th 2007 2:03AM
I agree ckelly. I do not have a side I just which that one format wins and that's it, but if the winning format is blu-ray and this kind of problems happen, that's not to good is it? Also blu-ray is not to big in europe believe that, if you want to watch the latest blu-ray titles you must have a region A (region 1) player ( because of region coding ). I got a toshiba HD DVD player and I can get my movies from anywhere (cheaper). If blu-ray is to wins the format war it's not only by having disney ( well if they stay, specialy after that comment sony made: stating spiderman 3 made a best result than pirates 3 ). Rot on discs what's next blu-ray? PS: To any blu-ray fanboy do not jump on me I support both formats and as a potential buyer I have to see the good and the bad in both formats, so keep your comments for yourself.

I see the HD DUD fanbois are up and gloating in these responses. HD-DVD sucks bigtime. We all know about those HD DVD discs not playing at all on some HD DVD players out there. Even universal admitted this!!
Liqwid @ Jun 17th 2007 12:27AM
All of mine play, every single one that I've bought, and I've been buying them since the Xbox 360 HD DVD player first came out.

Dave @ Jun 17th 2007 2:04PM
Geez! Why dont you get some education first? It takes 20mins just to read this bullshit of yours.
First of all you don`t need to use sony products at all. Blu-ray is supported by almost all companies and you may never see a sony Blu-ray device if thats your goal.
Try to improve your IQ a bit, then reply again.
HDMike @ Jun 17th 2007 2:02PM
There is a patent lawsuit being filed against Sony for their BD coating. Now they might have two reasons to reformulate the coating. ;)
will @ Jun 17th 2007 2:25PM

You are only a HD-DVD fan and i dont wanna jump over you but can you prove for me you have a defected BD rather than commenting and saying this maybe true.
Just face the fact you are saying this because you prefer HD-DVD to win and it is just a dreaming whereas BD is dominating every sales and in everywhere and not only this BD is showing its superiority with PQ and SQ over HD-DUD.
kayne001 @ Jul 16th 2007 11:24PM
wow
first of all all discs are subject rot, BD's don't rot for no reason. That disc was probably put in a bad area (places where cds, dvds are not recommended to be, areas where it gets too cold or too hot or above the preferred operating parameters)
I can't believe your reaction to this news. Out of the millions of disc and BD's out and we only see a couple cases of disc rot, seems to me like fanboys.
