I have to agree with Jeff N. that price isn't everything.
People seem to forget inflation, and companies use sneaky ways so you never know, like making the Mayonaise jar 30oz instead of 32oz, making the cardboard core of the Toilet paper larger in diameter so that there's less toilet paper.
Don't fool yourself, things of a realive quality level that cost 3 or 4 hundred now are the things that cost 250 10 years ago.
Some advances in production have made it to the retail price and saved us a bit, but a 199 player is just cheap, and there's no way around it.
Or in the case of the HD DVD players, the company is Eating it themselves.
