Attention Wal-Mart shoppers: New Sony HDTVs incoming
Want a new Sony HDTV but can't stand to look at the prices of the latest Bravia's? Consider yourself in luck as a "value priced" line should be hitting Wal-Mart, Target and other retail shops near you in the next couple of months. No word on price or specs, but it certainly appears the company will be going right at the Vizio's and Westinghouse's of the world. Other details released include plans to ramp up Blu-ray standalone player shipments "5 or 6 times" over last year's 100,000 units, and again that we can expect to see those beautiful OLEDs from CES to hit the streets in Japan...but only in 11-inch sizes. They also found time to mention that they don't plan on releasing a hybrid player, and that while 40-inch is the most popular LCD size now, their 8G plant will be on line soon to make 46- and 50-inch HDTVs at even lower prices.Read - Sony plans TV line for Wal-Mart, Target

Why might Sony be making MORE Blu-Ray players when stores are still sitting on the players they got shipped when they were first released? That makes zero sense, but then again, it is Sony.

Well Sony's $499 Blu-ray player is now out. That will help sales. It's a much friendly price than $999. And when Best Buy sends out those 10% discount coupons you wil be able to buy it for $450. And I would not be surprised if it will be selling for $399 in the fall. The consumer friendly prices will get more people to try it out and I think that reason and more software(movies) will tempt the public.

I'm as much of a Blu-ray fan the the next guy, but $450 isn't tempting. $199 on the other hand would make me seriously considering buying one.

By the time it's $199 I won't touch it. It will be junk by then.(Many corners will have to be cut to get the price to $199 and quality will suffer) Like the Hi-Fi VHF VCR's of yesterday, the $499 ones were actually built well and performed better than the $99 Hi-Fi VCR's down the road which were poorly built disposable plastic junk.

I have to agree with Jeff N. that price isn't everything.
People seem to forget inflation, and companies use sneaky ways so you never know, like making the Mayonaise jar 30oz instead of 32oz, making the cardboard core of the Toilet paper larger in diameter so that there's less toilet paper.
Don't fool yourself, things of a realive quality level that cost 3 or 4 hundred now are the things that cost 250 10 years ago.
Some advances in production have made it to the retail price and saved us a bit, but a 199 player is just cheap, and there's no way around it.
Or in the case of the HD DVD players, the company is Eating it themselves.
