IF, IF the Ps3 didn't have a BD player in it, this would be over. However the PS3 has won this war. You said you were going to keep checking the various format war sites, notice that amazon.com has another BD sale. That's were the 10 to 1 Ps3 ratio starts kicking in. If these sales start hitting the B&M, what do you think will happen next? If BD media drops 10-15% on average it will be enough to get people to look at the $50 more expensive BD player especially when the BDA starts playing the content card this Back to School season. The prices on BD players is $$ for $$ now when you look at features, and the S300 is even retailing for $425 already some places. An Onkyo player in Aug. which will be fairly pricy I imagine, will be as you put it, "a day late and a dollar short."

Red

Comments on

Red--

They're having a sale and their numbers spiked. Not relevant in the long run. This is what you guys call a "fire sale."

PS3 owners don't seem to buy all that many movies. Seeing that Casino Royale has jumped to the top of the BD charts, these movies are moving to people who usually don't buy movies (or they'd already have it). Wait a week and this will pass.

I've said for some time that Toshiba has to undercut the PS3 base. Even if you discount the PS3s by a factor of 5, that's still a lot of equivalent units (~400K) in the US, and more selling every day. So Toshiba needs to sell bunches of players, and they are trying to move 100K per month from what I read. If they can do that, and if Sony & Co don't cut their prices to the bone ($500 won't do it), they can win.

One might also consider the kind of movie PS3 buyers buy. If Sony caters to those guys (and I do mean guys) and ignores people who like, say, good drama, HD DVD has yet another way to appeal. BD boosters keep pointing to all them BD movies and saying content will win. For some of us, though, Casablanca is worth any number of Hellboys.

This war is far from done.

Kevin Murphy

Comments on

By the way, Red, when you talk about the players selling for the same price, you do realize that's pretty weak, right? Especially since the S300 and the 10A are nowhere on sale yet and list at $499 and $599 (vs $299 and $399 for the A2 & A20 (as of Sunday)). However if you want to talk MSRP(the $499 quoted price from you) the A20 is MSRP $499. Amazon.com prices are different, thought you knew that. Plus I said features, and when you get down to it the S300 has HDMI 1.3 and the A20 only has 1.2... So the Xa2 is really the only model that is the same which is MSRP at $699. It doesn’t matter if you want to think I'm wrong. You are just waiting your cash on HDDVD's. I don't mean to be rude.

I personally am going neutral and will not buy anymore HDDVD's until they have shown that they can at least have am Amazon.com/DVDempire sponsored sale. What about all us early HDDVD adopters that paid WAYYY more that $299-$399 for our players, don't we deserve a break too? Plus this is no "fire sale" this is exactly what I'm saying it is. The BDA showing off their cheaper media prices, while showing just how large the install base is and how much it has grown for BD.

Red

Comments on

Red--

Two things.

1) The MSRP for the A20 will be $399 as of Sunday, since Toshiba is sponsoring a $100 in-store rebate. $499 - $100 = $399.

2) Amazon has run promotions in the past. That is what Sales people will be telling people when they go in because there is more commission on BD players. Especially now when some places are retailing them for $425, the $25 difference is NOTHING to people who can afford a HiDef player, especially when it comes to quality. That is why the Xa2 sells so well on Amazon.com for $500. That is why Onkyo is making their player off of the Xa2. However, this could just as easily turn out to be a duo player out for the Christmas season. Plus Onkyo is on the HDDVD promo group so they could just be getting peoples hopes up to try and sell Tosh players...

Not that the A20 is a POS, but the Xa2 is the closest to the S300 in features, and it will MSRP for $699 this weekend. That is almost like BD players are cheaper.

2)That is when I bought my last HDDVD's. I also got a few for Christmas. Honestly, saving $7 on a $70 order is nothing compared to buy 2 get one free. Or BD from $13-$16. Just read this article, 600,000 RFOM have been sold in PAL regions 500,000 motorstom. http://www.gamespot.com/news/6172233.html
Add in the BD movies that have been sold there this year 85% BD, 67% BD. Then add in North American BD games and Movies sales(1.2m movies 1m+ games). Take that number, and compaire it to the number of HDDVD's sold world wide... 1m HDDVD's in N/A and a very small amout outside N/A.. That is almost a 4:1 Software ratio sold already.

BD movies are going to start to drop in price across the board just wait and see. It's how they are going to finish HDDVD off. Universal will be neutral in no time, and FOx, Lionsgate, Disney and Sony are going no where.

Red

Comments on

Edit: Add in the BD movies that have been sold there this year(europe) 85% BD, 67% SI BD.

Red
