Calling the shot: mounting / not mounting flat-panel above fireplace
While the question of hanging your new flat-panel above the fireplace or mantel has been around for years, it's about time the issue was actually tackled and looked at from a safety and feasibility standpoint. Admittedly, there are literally dozens of factors that can go into making said decision, and while no answer will be right for everyone, hopefully the following will lend a hand in easing your frantic mind. Granted, the more affluent homes that are often showcased in marketing promos make hanging a TV look like child's play, and while you may be able to cough up enough dough to let an experience installer come in and handle the dirty work for you, there's quite a few things (and alternatives) to consider. Of course, safety concerns surrounding recalled TV mounts, heat generated from a raging fireplace, and the actual wall material should be inspected first and foremost. Additionally, you should certainly consider just how difficult running every last cable (present and future) from your components below through the wall will actually (not) be, and for those working sans an AV cabinet, you might want to ponder just where you'll be placing those game consoles, receivers, and media players without ruining the overall allure. Still, there's no denying the attractiveness of a flat-panel HDTV hung neatly on a living room wall, but be sure and hit the links below and do a little planning of your own before pulling the trigger.

Why not just get a projector and project above the fireplace? You can get nice, decent sized screens for about $50 (I've told people that before, but for some reason most people contradict me because they seem to think that projector screens are $1000!).

I would hate having the TV sitting up that high. I don't like looking up at the screen.

how high you have to look depends on the distance back from the fireplace/tv and the height at which it is hung. I have my 40" lcd above my fireplace, the center of which is 6ft from the ground, and it's a perfectly natural feel to sit and watch it. As for the projector, screens don't look as cool as a tv, and ambient light will really kill the picture unless you spend upwards of $5,000

My parents have been talking about putting a TV above the fireplace, expect only a little higher due to the mantle about my fireplace. I told them how bad it would be to look up at to watch TV and how the wires would probably have to be all over the place. Its like you guys read my mind!

I have a question that maybe someone can help me with. I live in an a 2 story apartment and have neighbors living on one side. Now with out aggravating the land lord and messing up the walls, any one have any suggesting on how I can go about mounting my 42" LCD to the wall, pluss what to do with my Reciver and Xbox 360? Pointing me to a website would be much appreciated.

For how my living room is arranged I'm going to have to put the plasma above the fireplace. Right now I've got a 65" RPTV on the opposite wall from the fireplace and my main couch completely covering up the fireplace. The wife would like to actually use the fireplace at some point. Plus we want to sell the house in a few years and we feel a plasma hanging on the wall will spruce things up more than the gigantic RPTV sitting in the room. I don't know if I'm going to run all the wires through the wall. It would make things look a lot cleaner but I don't think it's feasible in our situation. Lukily for us though all the equipment is in the basement so only the tv and speakers will be visible in the living room.
