Sony: Casino Royale first HD release over 100k shipped
Sony just announced that Casino Royale has become the first high definition release to ship over 100,000 units, with over 50% of those sold through to consumers. Apparently its success surprised even Sony, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it only shipped 50k initially, resulting in a complete sellout after only a few days. Following up on its quest to not only surpass rival HD DVD, but supplant the existing DVD format, Sony Pictures counts only 9 months since Blu-ray's launch to the first 100,000 unit shipped mark, compared to eleven months for the first DVD to hit that number (Air Force One). With a 700 percent increase in disc sales since the PlayStation 3 launched, and all of its just-announced upcoming releases on the once rare 50GB discs, Sony sees all this as a clear sign Blu-ray is pulling away in the format war, not only in the U.S. but worldwide, as the U.K. release of Royale sold 10,000 in the first week despite being the PS3 pack-in bonus. Blu-ray was a slow starter last year, and now with one big title under its belt, we'll see if the format war is as close to being over as the BDA keeps telling us it is.Read - SPHE press release

IMO the Matrix Trilogy will blow away the sales figures for Casio Royale when it comes out.

Yes, the Matrix Trilogy probably -will- outsell Casino Royale... when Matrix is finally released on Blu-ray disc at the end of the year.
Suits me for HD-DVD to win - I have an add-on so it's cheaper. But it's inferior technology and the market has decided... Blu-ray is probably the victor.

And the PS3 breaks records in UK:

:)
Take that hd-dud!
LongGone @ Mar 27th 2007 11:20AM
Dave "Take that hd-dud!" - That's really Mature. Both formats are awesome and the speculation is that the Blu-Ray version of several movies including the Matrix Trilogy are being delayed because of Blu-Ray Java which is much harder to code than what HD DVD uses. I really don't care which format wins though.
hmurchison @ Mar 27th 2007 11:08AM
Casino Royale is a great movie. I loved it but 100k in HD sales pales in comparison to the how many DVD versions sold?
ecwalter @ Mar 27th 2007 11:55AM
Omg, people this format war will not be determined till the main stream decide to get HD. Sadly the main stream doesn't feel they need to because dvd is fine with them. This format war is between the minority of people that care about HD which is around 6% of the population. ITS HD DVD NOT HD-DVD. It's like doing Coca-Cola and Coca Cola (no hyphen needed for HD DVD) OMG PS3 breaks records in UK! Wow, you mean the PS3 Blue Ray player? It's not a gaming console, because Sony is using BR as the only Reason to buy it, becuase it's a cheap BR player. It's a cheap BR and an Over Priced Gaming Console.

You know, I think I may be the only person who didn't like this Bond movie. In fact, I thought it was the worst movie in Bond history. I just got up and walked away 20 minutes in 'cause I thought it was so boring. I'm just glad I didn't need a Blu-Ray player to watch it.
I'm still trying to figure out why Sony finds that shipped numbers are higher achievements over sales. I guess they'll find their flaw when they become bankrupt.
andy @ Mar 27th 2007 12:21PM
Is it really that surprising that it sold so many copies?
Think about it:
99.99% of blu-ray players are PS3's.
Who owns ps3's? White men between the ages of 16-40.
Who do you think the main demographic of bond movies is? White men ages 16-60 (and if they're 50 or 60, they have a 16yo with a ps3 in the house).
Given the choice (DVD or bluray), why wouldn't you buy the blu-ray version for the same price?
It's really just a matter of the two target demographics lining up. A gangbuster like "The Incredibles" or "Over the Hedge" wouldn't do nearly as well on blu-ray because the target audience doesn't own the players.
If 300 is on blu-ray, I'm betting it sells better than expected as well.

Happy Feet (HD DVD) is at #28 (in all DVD) this moment at Amazon. Happy Feet (Blu-Ray) is #48. So much for "the war is over and blu-ray won."
Children of Men (HD-DVD) is #18, and the Matrix pre-sell (HD-DVD) is #24.
Casino Royale (Blu-Ray) is #38, still selling well. The Pursuit of Happyness (Blu_ray) is #109 when the regular edition is #5.

"I just got up and walked away 20 minutes in 'cause I thought it was so boring."
So you really didn't see the movie? Then how can you pass judgment on it?
I think it could have been about 10 minutes shorter without hurting the movie whatsoever. But I'm talking about content in the last 45 minutes or so. Stupid love story, when is he going to get back to jumping off of buildings and blowing stuff up?
andy @ Mar 27th 2007 1:45PM
That's not classic bond at all, that's why bond fans really enjoyed the spy aspect of this one.
The opening scene was horrible, jumping around on cranes  That's what I think could have been cut down.
They did drag the down time a bit: after the poker game and before the Venice scene should have been a bit shorter.
The last thing I want to see is another Die Another Day.
You're right though, that guy didn't actually watch the movie at all. I've never really seen a movie that you could call by the first 20 mins, unless it was only 60 minutes long, and then it's bad because it's not even a real movie.
Dave @ Mar 27th 2007 1:56PM
Didn't the movie come bundled with the PS3? Are they counting those?
zombieflanders @ Mar 27th 2007 2:14PM
@hmurchison: Predictably, you use a completely specious argument to bolster your employer and/or argument. Anyone reading the article can see where it mentions that it took less time for the first Blu-ray title to reach 100k than the first DVD title. In that respect, it's meeting or beating DVD, while HD DVD hasn't even come close in total sales for 1 title.
@Dave: No, sales numbers come from retailers.
Porsche 911 @ Mar 27th 2007 1:56PM
well Sony owns all the Bond movies
Dave @ Mar 27th 2007 1:59PM
"Sony has announced that the first 500,000 people to register their PlayStation 3 on the PlayStation Network after the console's European launch will receive a free copy of James Bond film Casino Royale on Blu-ray."
Liqwid @ Mar 27th 2007 2:37PM
According to this article, if 50k units of Casino Royale were sold in the US and 10k in the UK, then 40K would have had to been given out free in promotion. Therefore, only 60k units of Casino Royale have been sold, not making it the fastest selling video.
The 100k number ought to be freebies and sold combined. Though, I could be wrong in my calculation.
SONIC @ Mar 27th 2007 2:48PM
THE NUMBER THE NUMBERS OMFG THE NUMBERS!!!! Does anyone really care. Both formats are great plan and simple. Its just that no one wants to be on the losing side. Any which way, this war is not ending anytime soon. BTW, Children of Men today with horrible cover art...go pick one up!
Just Me @ Mar 27th 2007 5:15PM
100K is nothing. UMD sold 100k too. This means nothing right now.
When it starts pull close to DVD, let me know.
SuperChuck @ Mar 27th 2007 10:06PM
I don't trust anything Sony says anymore.
After watching Sony make fools of themselves when the PS3 proved less than successful, I think they live completely in a fantasy world.
Andy @ Mar 31st 2007 4:39PM
HD-DVD and BlueRay are only a stopgap measure between the regular DVD format and on-demand delivery of video content. Soon enough, physical media won't matter because we'll all be getting HD content delivered to our livingrooms via fiber and there will be absolutely no need to store it locally.
People who invest more than a passing glance at either of these two physical media technologies are ignorant about how insignificant this 'war' is. It's LaserDisc version 2.0. Regrets to anyone who dropped $1K on a player.
Mr_Fizzlepop @ Apr 3rd 2007 6:09PM
Well, if you know how fast the country is moving to fiber optics, you know that it's not a stopgap.
At least 30% of the US won't have Fiber in 10 years..some don't even have DSL levels of Broadband now.
Doc @ Apr 3rd 2007 10:13PM
Release the same movie in both formats, and get back to me on the numbers... then we have a scientific experiment with a level playing field.
If Casino Royale was released on HD DVD, I would have bought it. It's in BR, so I didn't.
Still enjoying my $160 HDDVD player...via the XBOX360. Even SD DVD's look fantastic upscaled on this baby over VGA...and can't beat the price!
