Over a year after HD DVDs launch will bring Blu-ray's features closer to parity with HD DVD. Even more interesting is that despite the lack of persistent storage and ethernet on many BD players they still charged significantly more for their players (non PS3). It was as if consumers got caught up on 50GB discs and failed to look at the rest of the player.

Now imagine where we would have been had the studios just supported the format that was ready to replace DVD. Blu-ray wasn't ready and Sony led the biggest electronics filibuster in the history of consumer electronics.

hmurchison

Comments on

...and the format war is supposed to be over ? I hope people can see through this. If the requirements are as stated in this article, then the PS3 will meet them. 256MB of persistent memory is simply 256Gb of your hard drive, and and (for players with an internet connection) 1GB of memory for downloads is simply another 1Gb of your hard drive. Do people honestly think they would make BD-J with PIP not supported on the most successful Blu-ray player in the world? Also for those of you who think HD-DVD has a chance in hell, look around. Blu-ray has been out selling HD-DVD by more and more every month. As miserable as people are claiming the PS3 launch was in Europe and Australia. Blu-ray dominated those markets in less than a day after the PS3 launched. Australia has boycotted HD-DVD, no major retailer will carry it. It's been all over the news. Universal is the only major studio that has not adopted Blu-ray, and they just got rid of the major anti blu-ray individual in their team. Rumor has it that Universal is going to go dual format by the end of the summer. The first week Casino Royal was out it out sold the best selling HD-DVD by a factor of 9 to 1. I use to think Engadget was a worthy news resource, but with this article their bias is showing through. Oh and for those of you that think the PS3 is failing in Europe, perhaps you should tell that to Amazon UK where the PS3 hasn't left the top 2 spots (it's controller and the system) since it's inception, and IGN reported, "UK Stores Reporting Potential PS3 Sell-out" (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/775/775342p1.html) Get a grip on reality folks and do a little real research in stead of listening to this drivel.

Blufactor

Comments on

To Blufactor:
"256MB of persistent memory is simply 256Gb of your hard drive"

Ever had a computer that ran out of ram and used it's swap file for additional ram? Even though HD DVD may require support for TrueHD, only about 10% of the releases include it. Meanwhile nearly 50% of Blu-ray titles include a lossless PCM track, which provides the same quality, and all Blu-ray plsyers can support it. Further, there's no guarantee HD DVD players can output TrueHD - the Xbox 360 HD DVD addon reencodes the TrueHD as plain old Dolby 5.1, losing all the benefits of lossless.

Further, the features which become mandatory on new players released post-October primarily only affect PiP (which can be done without them, as shown by The Descent). There are all kinds of other interactivity which aren't affected, and Blu-ray's interactivity is far more capable than HD DVD's (though current titles haven't even scratched the surface yet).

MikesOnline, using the hard drive for A/V storage this isn't the same as virtual memory. The spec just requires a place to store data - the hard drive will provide no speed penalty compared to using flash memory. HD DVD only requires 128MB of storage, enough for only a few minutes of HD video. Blu-ray's requirement for 1GB for network-connected players at least offers enough space to do something meaningful...

Talkstr8t

Comments on

"Ever had a computer that ran out of ram and used it's swap file for additional ram? Persistent memory is stuff like hard drives and flash drives. It doesn't need to be fast, just store stuff while the power is off.

Secondly, I found a lovly little quote regarding the ps3:

"# Since the standards for BD-ROM such as BDMV and BD-J were delayed, particular player functions were developed later while 2 years has already passed for the development of software decoding function for codecs such as H.264.
# H.264 decoding itself was not very difficult for Cell with moderate optimization and they could play a movie in realtime at the first try unlike very difficult SACD optimization. However, because they began the development without knowing the final Blu-ray standard, they set the goal very high for decoding 2 full HD H.264 streams at 40Mbps simultaneously. Besides the clockspeed of the devkit was lower than the final product which made the development difficult. The current decoder can decode full HD H.264 with 3 SPEs."

The PS3 can handle 2 40Mbps streams.
