Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but last i checked in EU (might have been just england) there had been less than 10,000 combined sales between both formats.
what you said is also very true, the hd-a2 and hd-ax2 are very good upconversion players. the only problem w/ this particular fact is, the avg "next gen" dvd shopper isn't going to be taking this into consideration. its going to be mainly price, brand loyalty, and the available titles in each respective format. more advanced electronics users will probably know about this. But hypothetically, if the format wasn't doing too well, why would anyone want to shell out $500 for an upconversion player, which also happens to support a hardly sold/used next gen format. I think people might be willing to sacrifice unconversion quality (hypothetically if it were worse)and purchase a 2nd gen sony, pioneer, panasonic player that played a more popular next gen hd format.
the only thing i can say is, the global picture as far as hd-dvd vs blu ray will be really be taking shape come june, july, august...

SimbaDogg

Comments on HD DVD looks Circuit City's way, compels independent filmmakers

It would be interesting to see if Microsoft started bundling deals with some of these Indies if they go HD-Dvd only. To be honest with you most consumers usually tend towards the LG. The Toshiba never really sold, Never in the 6months that I was at CC did I see the Toshiba sold. People like to play it safe when it comes to the format war. The LG is noticeably faster than the Toshiba and Samsung BR players. The LG definately sells. It was also hard to find for customers because they would sell out in stores. Also when customers ask what I would pick, I'm honest and tell them to go for a Playstation 3. Why not? The Sony 1st gen player goes for $1000 in the store. You get a gaming console for the kids or themselves plus a Blu-Ray Player. For all the people who are looking for best picture and sound yes I do explain HD-DVD is better but to be honest Blu-Ray seems to be a safer bet right now and not extreme difference in quality.

JM

Comments on HD DVD looks Circuit City's way, compels independent filmmakers

With the introduction of the PS3, Blueray has a hardware lead of 5:1 over HD-DVD, but they only have a software lead of 2:1. This is very good news for HD-DVD. That tells me that more people are buying HD-DVD's to watch movies.

Mallomm

Comments on HD DVD looks Circuit City's way, compels independent filmmakers

I think the 5:1 and 2:1 ratios tells me there are more BluRay machines out there (mostly since the PS3 was released. These gamers are also buying DVD's to try them out.Since Blu ray came out months after HD DVD it seems the Blu Ray has overtaken HD DVD. The question is whether gamers will drive DVD sales in a prolonged way. If so, Blu Ray should come out on top because there id far more PS3 out there than XBox 360 (with a HD DVD drive). If stand alone DVD players become the main driver, the outcome might be a toss up.

My opinion - it doesn't matter, online downloading will make the DVD obsolete so Microsoft and Sony better make their money quick.

cswimm
