Sharp LC-52D92U 1080p LCD reviewed

CNET got their hands on the 52-inch version of Sharp's latest 1080p HDTVs, the LC-52D92U, that we first saw at CES. The good news is that it shares the deep black levels of its Aquos D62 predecessor, the bad news is it also brings along the unfortunate banding issues that plagued the previous generation. They also looked into the newly added 120Hz refresh rate that we're seeing in so many LCDs, and compared to a cheaper unit from Vizio, couldn't really tell the difference, even during fast moving action scenes. They didn't find many other issues with the set, commending its upscaling abilities and plenty of connections, but until the banding problems get resolved, Sharp's 8G-based panels will be a skip for most keen-eyed HDTV watchers.

I had last year's 42D62U model, and it had a pretty bad banding problem. I returned it after a couple weeks. I can't believe Sharp didn't fix the problem with the new models. Ouch.

i myself wasn't too familiar w/ the banding issues, but i noticed something fishy was up w/ the 92. I recently got the TV on display @ my work, and the spot that i usually...stand and do nothing at...is about 5 feet from it. so i got curious, and started to adjust. I've always been somewhat good at adjusting TVs, not ISF good, but good enough, but i just could shake the banding in the screen, couldn't get rid of it. I'm glad it wasn't something w/ me.

I got my LC-52D92U 3 weeks ago, It doesn't have any banding issues, I read alot of forums before getting it and alot of people mentioned banding with the 62U series. I highly recommend this LCD, nothing but comments from people who have Plasma's, LCDs, DLPs.

For the record, the Cnet article says this isnt a true 120Hz set.
From the article...
"Sharp also adds a 120Hz frame rate conversion mode to the spec sheet, which is not the same as a true 120 Hz refresh rate (we mistakenly thought it was for the initial publication of this review)."

I've had a L-C52D92U for about a week. Image is nearly perfect - no banding that I can see. ALso, no difficulty with action scenes. Highly recommended. Note - direct comparison with Sony showed this screen superior. Only slightily less accurate than the Pioneer 1080p plasma (at $7500++)
