Seeing that I have the 360 HD DVD add-on. I can say that I am totally happy with this player. Its just that the movies are to far and in-between. The Prestige, Commando, Casino Royal all BRD. Seeing that studios are in BD feild. you can see that they are dumping movies in a hurry to get more and more people out there. Smart i will say. I just wish we could just stop acting like BD is a better format. At this point both camps are pissing me off. They all want our money. I've seen $40 HD-DVD as well as Blu-ray so quit your BS. As for movie reviews, where the hell did you see this?? Blu-ray reviews are getting outstanding scores for Picture Quality. "Open Season", "The Covenent", "Crank", "The Wild" are some of the movies receiving near-perfect or perfect scores. I own both players, "King Kong" being the best on HD-DVD. I've also seen some bad transfer on HD-DVD. In terms of PQ, I would give Blu-ray the superior format when most of their movies are coming out in the AVC MPEG-4 codec vs VC-1. Do you like being "forced" to by a DVD player with an XBox 360? You don't like SONY fine, but they aren't forcing you to do or buy anything. You would have preferred they not bundle a Blu-Ray player, then buy something else. Some very significant portion of people like the Blu-Ray being bundled, and the fact that games in the future will take advantage of it rather than having to target the lowest common denominator. Sure XBox 360 will play HD-DVD movies with an add on, but there will be few if any games that will use the extra storage space.

If you don't have an HDTV then the PS3 is a poor choice, buy the Wii for best value. If you have an average HDTV (720p) then get the XBox 360, but I'd wait on adding an HD-DVD unless you can stand buying a Blu-Ray latter, or want both formats now for flexibility (cheaper than a dual format stand alone player, and the kids can play with one machine while the adults watch movies on the other). If you have a high end 1080p DLP projector that you spent 2-3 grand on then get a PS3 (you obviously have the money to afford it), but quit whining about how SONY didn't build exactly the machine to your specification for what you want to pay.

My prediction, nobody wins this round in the game-console wars. Wii will sell more units this year, that is for sure. SONY may win in gross dollars sales (less units, but more expensive). Microsoft already recouped their investment by getting to market a year early.

Do I want SONY to win? Sort of. Despite their missteps and DRM, I applaud the bold choices they took in bring the PS3 to market and have high hopes the Cell-Processor will bring new life to computer system design with has stalled out the last four years with IA32/64 maxing out at 3ghz and not scaling well to multiple cores (though they are trying).

DumbSwede

Comments on HD DVD and Blu-ray releases on February 6th, 2007

Blu-ray weird but not so many new titles in that list, hahahahahahaha people just counting on that, ok 1 title more. I don't have an issue with Sony (I have a Sony DVR and Amp), I just can't afford to spend the money on a Blu-Ray player. I'm kind of surprised the HD-DVD folks haven't pushed harder to keep themselves in front. Their format came out first with cheaper players. I figured that HD-DVD players would be down around $400 or even lower next x-mas, and that depending on the titles that were out I might convert. HD dvd can now hold 51 gb, but who cares the hd dvd movies easily fit on 15 gb. Plus the in movie experience with picture in picture is way better than the java thing with blu-ray.

2. So you will be getting a 50+ 1080p and PS3. Obviously money is of no concern to you. To most of us it is. Most people are not will to make the investment you are.

3 I asked if you liked being forced to buy a blu-ray player just to get a PS3, not if you wanted a PS3. That is a totally different topic.

4. Well I was comparing blu-ray player to hd dvd players. However the xbox 360 dvd is only $199 and it still comes with King Kong and a universal remote and works on decently powered pc's as well with cyberlink's powerdvd 6.5 or 7.1.

5. I don't know of any blu-ray movie that is cheaper than hd dvd unless you compare them to the hd dvd hybrids. They have the hd dvd movie on one side and the dvd version on the other side which blu-ray cannot do. Plus those movies are also available in formats with just the hd dvd movie only. Could you name some examples of where blu-ray movies are cheaper than hd dvd?

All the reviews, I have read is that the hd dvd movies look as good or better that blu-ray movies. The movies from Sony's studio don't even use the best codecs. They use mpeg2 instead of mpeg4 or vc-1. The mpeg2 codec was created back on 1988. Other blu-ray movies use the newer codecs, but Sony's studio does not. HD dvd's all use the best codecs usually vc-1. Blu-ray movies don't do Dolby TureHD either which hd-dvd does.

I just don't see why people think blu-ray is superior to hd dvd. I just don't see it at all, but I do respect your opinion.

MIkesOnline

Comments on HD DVD and Blu-ray releases on February 6th, 2007

Who oh why must every article turn into a contest of who has the biggest *****. Rather, they're subsidizing the best blu-ray player on the market at a $250-350 loss per unit. Is that evil? Do you see any stand-alone players go for $499? And when it comes to gaming - have you seen how game sizes are growing? The PS3 is future proof, and will surely have the same lifespan as the PS2 has had. The 360, on the other hand will have to be replaced with a new model in 3-4 years to be able to keep up.
* It isn't Sonys format, BR is developed by a multitude of companies (BR is more Panasonic than sony). There is no Sony bashing going on. I have plenty of Sony products, a video camera, a digital camera and a receiver. My next tv may even be a Sony.

I just don't see why people think blu-ray has won. I don't even think it is the superior format for movies. The in movie experience with picture in picture on HD dvd is really cool. Blu-ray has java, but it's nowhere as cool as the in movie experience. Every review I have seen where the same movie has been released on both formats has the hd dvd version winning.

The only advantage blu-ray has had is space and now hd-dvd has a 51 gb version which is way more than is needed for hd movies. So you can eaisly do LOTR with highest quality sound/PQ on hd-dvd. You wouldn't need anywhere close to the 51 gb to do LOTR on hd dvd. In fact Warner Brother's has already stated that it is going to be releasing LOTR on their new format that has the hd dvd movie on one side and blu-ray movie on the other side. So that totally nullifies your argument that it LOTR cannot fit on hd dvd. You should get your facts strait before posting.

Look at it however you want, you cannot get a PS3 without a blu-ray player. How many Sony Fanboys without an hdtv do you think are glad the PS3 has a blu-ray player? What if something else comes along and wins the format other than hd dvd and blu-ray? At least xbox 360 owners have a choice.

I am not worried about games being to big for one dvd. I would rather have the lower system price, faster load times and choice to add hd dvd when I wanted. In reality is all subjective. I am more concerned about what can make the community of movie lovers like us here. Who seem to have a strong opinion based on news we hear, read from each others camps. Like LG's player was a nice start. But what about the separate players(PS3, XBOX Add-on) These companies want our money really bad. No one wants to lose from early adaption. Which is why i bring up the point of the Hybrid disc once again. Would this not make everyone happy?!? Why i chose HD DVD was cause I already had a 360 which is just on a roll with games as of late. Also XBL being f$!king genius. Picking up a HD DVD for 200 was a no brainer for that price. Seeing that someone would think logically about making both camps happy. Like Warner has with the Hybrid disc. Was to me a great idea. I just don't like how Sony has trashed the HD DVD format when the movies look just as great. Also forcing Blu Ray onto people who want a game machine. Which is another aspect of my 360 purchase on the eve of PS3 launch. Which felt really good. HEHE Even if they have to put them on both formats. Its not like these bastards can't afford it. He hasn't lied to us yet. He's really a cool guy we chat all the time but i wasn't there that day. He really seemed sure. I forwarded the info to 1up.com, gamesarefun.com, and wanted to forward to joystiq and engadgetHD but don't know how so if anyone does let me know or let them know. I still thnk HD-DVD will win come on porn is a big business and if this is true blu-ray already lost. the only think keping blu-ray afloat is the idea of Disney movies on blu-ray and the PS3. I have heard rumors of some movies studios switching to both. Plus i have read that blu-ray is a pain in the ass to developfor especially for the PS3's Cell CPU they have to program for each cell and that makes labor go up and if that goes up the games costs more to make and they have to sell alot of games just to break even and if aren't alot of PS3's out they won't do it which is why the PS3 is losing tons of exclusives.

BY the way I work at best buy and i know my stuff. Plus our movie rep who knows alot about movies and does our sales promotions form the movie studios also thinks blu-ray won't last.

Also blu-ray does cost alot more to produce then HD-DVD and more dificult to program for. Plus HD-DVD has combo formats going for it.

Also there is no way one studio including disney sells more then the porn industry they are a $12B business worldwide with the majority of it being the US and i think japan. DOn't underestimate the power of porn there are alot of horny pervs out there and lots of couples who buy porn to spark the romance.

Like i said i forwarded the story to 1up.com and gamesarefun.com and i will see of they turn anything up.

By the way movie studios will change loyalties faster then you can say your own name. THey are in it for the money not because they are loyal to one format. If HD-DVD continues to sell well (which is still beating blu-ray which is funny seeing how blu-ray has the most support and stil losing :-p) they will switch to both HBO did they were suposed to be only blu-ray but switched to doing both.

The PS3 is failing hard to me it's the only reason why blu-ray is remotely still standing and the funny thing is it's biggest competitor is it's little brother the PS2 and is also losing to the PSP which has lackluster sales, sony even said it whrn they announced their game division is losing alot of money so far this quarter. If they drop the price they lose even more money but they have to think of a way to get the PS3 into more homes to keep their exclusive licenses.

time will tell to see if this news story i am told is true or not. I didn't say it was true or not just said if it is true blu-ray is dead.

Phoenixxx1974

Comments on HD DVD and Blu-ray releases on February 6th, 2007

But isn't it true that the new 51g discs will not be compatible with most of current HD DVD players? He must either be 10 or is just trying really hard to have people believe that Hd-DVD will be making a HUGE comback. It's been knowen for quite sometime that porn will be on blu-ray, so I'm not sure who your trying to fool Phoenixxx1974 but the people on here know quite abit about these topics.
The 51 gig HD-DVD is a Tripple Layered disk anyway, so It doesn't really matter if it's in production or not, if you don't have a Tripple layered HD-DVD player they will be usless to you. In other words more $ out of your pockect for a new HD-DVD player because there are no tripple layered Hd-DVD players on the market yet that I'm familiar with. Still though they will not be scratch resistant like a BD is now!
Also the Hd-DVD camp is starting to be knowed as a bunch of BS'ers, not the poeple who own a HD-DVD setup, the poeple that are producing them. What kind of morons would say that their biggest exclusive movies that they have are coming out, only to have the DIRECTOR of those moovies demand an apology for false claims, and all you Hd-DVD supporters want to act like the BDA is a buch of crooks? Yeah nice try!

bill
