As long as Disney has been supporting Blu-ray, fans everywhere have wondered; where is
Cars and
Pirates of the Caribbean? Many have even doubted Disney's commitment to the format as a result. There were rumors that Disney was only waiting for the whole BDJ mess to get worked out, either way the wait is over. Well it's almost over and at least we have dates for both
Pirates movies and
Cars.
The Curse of the Black Pearl and
Dead Man's chest will both be timed with the theatrical release of the 3rd Pirates movie on May 22nd,
Cars will follow shortly after on June 5th. This is good news for fans, but unfortunately no other details are available.

Good. Will be picking up those 3 for sure!
Jeff N @ Jan 25th 2007 2:23AM
I might even own a Blu-ray player by then. Maybe?
Fredster @ Jan 25th 2007 6:04AM
I, on the other hand, will wait till they come in HD-DVD. If they won't, then so be it, i will not buy them, i'll just get them as DVD's or wait till they get available as HD download year 20XX...
Dave @ Jan 25th 2007 6:53AM
They wont believe me...
AG @ Jan 25th 2007 10:30AM
@Fredster
They won't come on HD-DVD. Disney is exclusive to Blu-Ray.
Denis @ Jan 25th 2007 10:40AM
If HD-DVD keeps out selling Blu-Ray, Disney may have no choice but to start releasing on HD-DVD or miss out on sales.

Yes, but for how long? With millions of HD-DVD owners coming this next year into 2008, how long will these "Blu-ray ONLY" studios decide to avoid possible sales of their content by not supporting HD-DVD?
ALSO, you forget about the overseas market for so-called "Blu-ray ONLY" titles, that are also being released to non-region HD-DVD discs [can be played in any player world-wide]. USA studios are allowing their overseas markets to release in HD-DVD, not just Blu-ray [which IS region-coded, another Blu-ray bummer].
Also, what is the big deal about LITE-ON's Blu-ray drive. I guess everyone missed the December announcement that LITE-ON will also produce HD-DVD burner drives, as well as low-cost stand-alone HD-DVD players.
But a low-cost stand-alone Blu-ray player? Oh yeah, that's right - THEY DON'T EXIST! Blu-ray is an overpriced system, mainly used for videogames like the PS3 and computer-storage.
Don't believe the lies. Blu-ray movie sales are in 2nd place to #1 HD-DVD, and have been since day one. Keep trying Blu-ray, but by this winter, the HD-DVD system will be the most popular high-definition disc format for sales, because of lower-costs and better quality... sorry Blu-ray early adopters.
tony @ Jan 25th 2007 12:44PM
Except all indications are now that Blu-ray is outselloing HD-DVD. For example, DVDempire says Blu-ray is outsellling HD-DVD by about 60:40, even though Blu-ray did not get started until much later.
Amazon also shows that Blu-ray has caught up and rising much faster than HD-DVD sales (HD-DVD had a avery large lead in mid-2006), and should pass it this month.
So, it looks like the end for HD-DVD!
tranzparentl @ Jan 25th 2007 1:22PM
@AG
I believe with the current situation neither side will win and both will survive which will eventually force exclusive studios on either side to have dual releases.
tony @ Jan 25th 2007 1:47PM
Not when HD-DVD has no content. The sales chart of HD-DVD sales is already sorta flat in Amazon, while Blu-ray's is rising. The point is it costs money to make two formats, so the studios have no benefit in ensuring two formats survive. They want one or the other, not both, and since most are already aligned with Blu-ray, that's what they'll choose as the eventual winner.
bill @ Jan 25th 2007 3:43PM
Ya and if BLu-ray keeps rising why would companies that have invested entirely in blu-ray start supporting hd-dvd, so they can start to compete against themselves? NO whey will invest in blu-ray more. Go to Lite-on's site they advertise for both BD and HD but guess what
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=21709&vpn=LH-2B1S&manufacture=Liteon
I cant find a Lite-on HD-DVD drive, and aren't they one of the companies that were going to help smash BD??
Duscrom @ Jan 25th 2007 6:24PM
I hate sony with a passion.. but god let this format war be over soon. I don't care which side wins or looses.. i just think this format war is a waste of time.
Marc T @ Jan 25th 2007 8:48PM
Nope, won't be getting Pirates, or any other movie on BluRay. I'll just do DVD. Even after all this time, Pirates is really the first BluRay disc I'd really care to own. Won't be buying a BD player any time soon, either. I also dislike Sony's constant attempts to force proprietary technology on me. They can't just use a compact flash card or SD memory card for cameras. They have to come up with Memory stick, for just one example!
boots @ Jan 25th 2007 11:08PM
Hahaha, Fredster is an HD-DVD fanboy. Dude, this film will kill your system, don't worry. If you are so cheap to buy a Blu-ray player (or you burned the cash you got buy rushing into buying an HD-DVD player, as most of them), then buy a PS3. It's the best one out there yet the cheapest alternative. It also happens to play games, so you won't feel the burn of having bought an HD-DVD, much.
Fredster @ Jan 27th 2007 12:56PM
Yes Boots, i am a HD-DVD fanboy, i admit it. Marc T points out actually some of the reasons why i don't like Blu-Ray or Sony. And i haven't burned my cash on running into buying a system, as i do not yet own one! But it doesn't stop me from owning more HD-DVD's whether i have a player or not. If and when i buy a player, it will never be a PS3, as it's not a "real" player, it's just a cheap player with gaming possibilites. And why would this kill my system? If you read my first comment, i said that if they don't come as HD-DVD i'll go for DVD or wait till they get available as HD download. Now which part of that did you not understand, i'll be glad to go over it a third time if needed.
Mark @ Jan 26th 2007 1:31AM
First will come the combo players, then price will dictate which format becomes adopted by the studios. Overhead on BR is much higher than HD-DVD so my money is that HD-DVD will NOT DIE. I won't say who 'wins' the war but I guarantee HD-DVD will live long and prosper :).
Daniel @ Jan 26th 2007 9:14PM
Will definetely get these titles, especially since they are on Bluray HD DVD sucks
digitalbt @ Jan 27th 2007 8:59PM
Well, since HD-DVD is cooler, cheaper, and everyone who bought a PS3 likely has it connected with the composite (yellow) video cable so they aren't even watching it in HD anyway...I officially declare HD-DVD the winner! I guess BLU-RAY is dead. Bye BLU-RAY! BYE!!
