LG's BH100 Super Multi Player unboxed
Well this is more like it. After waiting forever between the initial announcement and first retail availability of the first wave of HD disc devices, LG's BH100 really rocketed to the shelves, and has just participated in its first unboxing (that we've heard of) mere weeks after the announcement at CES. We're a little disconcerted by that big front-and-center dent on the box, but the unit itself looks just dandy, and gadgetaholic promises a full review in the coming days. But that's not what you're here for, you just wanted to see this little guy ripped from his Styrofoam cocoon and flap his little Red and Blue wings, so hit the read link for the whole event. Fly, BH100, fly.

Could someone explain this to me:
Why does this DVD player have a fan on the back of it? Wouldn't the fan noise be "excessive?"
Do the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players feature a fan as well?

hd dvd players are PCs which are repacked to run movies, thats why they need fans and they are unreliable and poor quality.

Oh really? So since Sony's Playstation 3 needs two or three fans itself to keep cool [online info] this must mean the PS3 is "unreliable and poor quality" - yes?
And hey sport, HD-DVD players don't just "play movies", but also concerts, TV shows, and CDs (and MP3 CDs too!). Does Sony's new $1000 Blu-ray player offer CD playback? NOPE - what a joke, and a big WA$TE of money!

@dave
That was only the 1st model, and it wasn't as unreliable as its Sony or Samsung counterparts. Toshiba's 2nd model is not a repackaged PC.

Well, they 're all PCs more or less. DVD players, HD-DVD players & BD-players have PC components and run some type of closed OS. Their discs just store data, they don't contain the movie engraved as VHS cassettes did. Then it's all up to the player, its processing power, its software etc. That's why the same movie can look very different subject to the quality of the player. And its also why some players can play video encoded in different codecs, say Xvid or WMV, AVC etc.
So they really are PCs with a very limited scope. Plus, they look nice in order not to disturb your living room aesthetics and they run silent in order not to ruin your viewing experience (hear that Xbox 360 + add-on? :p) Toshiba's first HD-DVD player was just a bit too obvious about this fact. Welcome to the digital age.

Why does this player not upconvert SD DVDs to 1080p (only 1080i)?

Dave, you are very tiresome, take a break. As we say in Russia, you are the plug to every hole in the world.
