CBS plans first HD DVD release: Star Trek TOS
CBS has created a new division within itself, CBS Home Entertainment, specifically to focus on DVD releases. First up are plans to dive headfirst into the Blu-ray / HD DVD marketplace by releasing the newly-remastered-in-HD Star Trek series in the fourth quarter of this year on a DVD/HD DVD combo disc. No word on a Blu-ray release date, however like Paramount Pictures we can expect them to be nuetral in the format war. CBS Home Entertainment plans to roll out 85-90 releases this year, including content from Showtime. It's certainly interesting to see HD DVD releases planned already for the fourth quarter, especially since Blu-ray already won, but that notwithstanding, we'll see if Trekkies take to the combo disc trojan horse, opting for HD DVD players later to check out each episode in resolutions fit for their HDTVs.[Via High Def Digest]

Um, I think the article should read "...since Blu-Ray has already DECLARED victory..." rather than saying that the had "...already won...". Pretty shoddy reporting. You could actually say the same thing about HD-DVD since they have also spoken up to decalre victory. Neither statement should be reported that they have actually done so based upon their own claims....idiot.

It seemed pretty obvious to me that it was a sarcastic comment. Way to go with the name-calling though.

Yeah Blu Ray won and the reason why I know it's because they aren't releasing how many stand alone players have been sold while HD DVD people do say. Shame on them, maybe should've kept their #'s a secret so this "format war" that $ony helped create could've hang in there longer so more people wasted their money on bluray players.

I think we're missing the point. True, it's silly that someone in the Blu-ray realm has declared themselves the winner but the real story that it's really great that CBS is putting out an HD version of a classic TV show. I hope other studios follow their lead and put other classic shows out in HD.
Now, back to the HD war: I don't have a preference as to which format is better. However the fact remains that since the Playstation 3 (with a Blu-ray drive built in)is one of the hottest items out and gamers of all ages are clamering to get one, and that they've sold more than 2 million units in 3 months in the US alone , it would appear Sony has a definite advantage.

Wow, you're delusional. Sony (by their own admission) only shipped 1 million units to the U.S. (another million to Japan) and they haven't come close to selling out. Go to any place that sells consoles and you will find stacks of unsold PS3s. Time Magazine named it "Flop of the Year" and Japanese retailers have resorted to deep discounts (on top of the already discounted Japanese price) to get the units off their floors. While the 360 was sold out until April of 2006, the PS3 early adopters were tapped out before the end of December. The PS3 is Virtual Boy-level disaster.

FWIW NBC is running these new versions in the NYC market somewhere vaguely around 3 AM Mondays (vaguely in that with football you MUST record a 2+ hour chunk to be sure of seeing a complete show). They look great, there are some things (the coloring of the Horta being one) that were there but that we never really got to see in any of the original broadcasts. One thing though, it's 4:3, so undoubtedly will be the ONLY 4:3 HD or BD title.
As for HD optical, my advice is DON'T DRINK THE KOOL-AID!
