Lord of the Rings HD DVD and Blu-ray details
We first learned that New Line would be releasing Lord of the Rings on both HD DVD and Blu-ray during the Warner Total HD press conference last week at CES, but no details were given. Now HD-Insider is reporting some details about the upcoming release -- each movie will be on a single dual layer disc encoded using VC1 and will include Dolby TrueHD 7.1. Release date is still unknown and we can only assume that if the title is released the second half of the year it will be a Total HD disc.

If its a TotalHD disc I'll buy it without hesitation. I might buy the HD-DVD if its seperate.

OH YEAH. I am all about LOTR on HD-DVD :-)
Smart to release it on both we can see which formats sells more. This is one of the key franchises i think alogn with Matrix (just fr visual effects which should look insane in HD), and of course STAR WARS.

What the crap? THEATRICAL?! I guess that's what we get when New Line has a fight with Peter Jackson.
I will not buy these. Special Edition is PJ's 'official' vision and it's better to boot. Damn you New Line!

I must have missed something - what makes you think they will be releasing the original theatrical version, and not the beloved extended versions.

Art, if you click on the 'Read' link, it takes you to HD Insider where they have it in bold stating that it will be the theatrical release.
I'm hoping they'll do the same as what they did with the standard dvd releases and in a few months release the extended versions.

I have been wait for LOTR to come out on HD-DVD. Although I want the extend versions and if so I would buy them in a second.

Wow, about time! I'm not so upset about them only being the theatrical release. I already have the extended version on DVD, but I don't have the theatrical versions. And sometimes, I just want to watch "Return of the King" in less than 3 hours. Now I can do it in HD. w00t!
