We guess they don't call it "
Elite" for nuthin', as Pioneer's
Elite Pro-FHD1 has been crowned the "Product of the Year" according to
Sound and Vision Magazine and
Ultimate AV. The firm's 50-inch, 1080p plasma was deemed a "
technological milestone, complete with images that burst off the display for a near 3D effect," which are pretty strong words considering the smorgasbord of fantastic PDPs alone that came out last year. Of course, Mr. Mossberg would probably still argue that his Pioneer
Elite PRO-1140HD was the better choice, but hey, he also tried to convince us that 1080p wasn't an
important factor when scouting our your next set. Nevertheless, our hats are off to the folks at Pioneer, and while we're sure this beauty deserved its tiara, the $7,999 pricetag will still keep it out of all but the most affluent homes -- and
Pioneer, don't count on next year's award coming easy, as you've already got some seriously
stiff competition just a fortnight into the new year.

"...don't count on next year's award coming easy, as you've already got some seriously stiff competition just a fortnight into the new year." a.k.a. the Sharp 4K panel.
Oh, please! It's still an LCD---low contrast, low color reproduction, low pixel response time, and very poor scaling. In any case, until there is 4K source material to watch which isn't scientific-oriented, this is not a contender for the consumer market.

They had one of these in the new home theater room at Best Buy and it looks like shit. It even had a big red line going through it. I'll keep my 1080p 42" Westy over this overprices POS anyday.

I saw it at a nearby Best Buy, as well as several other stores in the area, and it did look the best after spending WAYYY too much time looking at tv's. Is it the best bang for your buck? Hardly. But it certainly has more bang than any other tv I've seen on the market today.

I've seen this unit and it looked gorgeous..yeah it's better than the 720p version, but I didn't think the price was worth it over the 720p Pioneer Elites.
And to the above posters...you honestly think the TV looking like crap in a Best Buy is a fault of the display? Try going to a respectable home theater store if you want to see nice displays in their full glory.
The closest LCD would be the Sony XBR3...but even its blacks look gray in comparison.
