HDMI 1.3 on deck for 2007
Unless you've got a PlayStation 3, we can probably peg the number of HDMI 1.3-equipped devices in your home right now at exactly zero. However, if you've been waiting for Deep Color displays and receivers that support all next generation audio codecs like DTS-HD Master, Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus there are plenty of devices on their way in 2007. According to EETimes online, Sony and Mitsubishi will be debuting new TVs (like Mitsu's Laser rear projecting HDTV) that take advantage of the wider color gamut afforded by HDMI 1.3. Besides xvYCC, 32-bit Deep Color support will increase color accuracy on upcoming TVs. Denon might not be ready to jump into the HD DVD / Blu-ray battle, but it's got several 1080p and HDMI 1.3-compatible receivers on the way including advanced audio and video processing capabilities. We should see one more HDMI 1.3 device this year when Toshiba releases the HD-XA2 HD DVD player, but the real treats will be waiting at CES 2007.[Thanks, Brian]

Man! That Playstation 3....what a piece of crap, huh?
I mean seriously, it's got Blu-ray, the Cell processor, Wifi....wireless controllers, free online multiplayer, Sony Store download area, a web browser, some good games on the way and it's got HDMI 1.3!
Wow...I'm so mad at myself..I could have bought an XBOX 360 for $399 and got none of the above.
I'm so sad I bought a PS3....NOT!

Yeah, all that great stuff and... 1 decent game.
Too bad I have an Xbox 360 and all these critically acclaimed, better looking games to play! I sure wish I was smart and bought the PS3 for 200 extra dollars.
I sure wish my computer didn't already do everything the PS3 could do, then maybe I wouldn't have to throw it in the garbage when I get Sony's console.

Wow...so let's see..for an extra hundred smackers more than 360Prem, I got a Blu-ray player and HDMI 1.3.
Shweeeeet!!
At $399, the 360Prem, is wayyyy overpriced considering what you don't get. And there is no way I'm buying the core, that things just crap. No HDD, no wireless controller.
BTW, I got the $499 version of the PS3. It does everything the 60GB version does. I can always upgrade the drive myself. And I already had a gaming wireless adapter.
PS...you got two games...lol...halo and GoW, all 5 levels of GoW. And the new halo isn't even out...so I guess that's 1 title you have, touche'.

hate to break it to you buddy but cnet says hdmi 1.3 isn't worth waiting for and that the average joe home theatre won't be able to tell the difference between hdmi 1.1 and 1.3. quit chasing specs and enjoy what's available right now.

Both consoles are cool. The PS3 does have a dearth of standout games though.
HDMI 1.3 is ok. Deep Color has to be supported by both end devices. You don't magically get better color. Passing native hirez codecs is nice but that may take a while and an expensive AVR before you're enjoying that.
The PS3 is a great deal. There's a reason why it's BoM is most likely $800. It has a lot of stuff in it.

So, Kutaragi claims PS3 supports HDMI 1.3. How, exactly?
It won't be the deep colour, RSX (aka GeForce 7900) only supports 8 bit framebuffers. Better compressed audio support maybe? Though there's no point when HDMI can already do 8 channel uncompressed. So... what?
Ben Hobbs @ Dec 20th 2006 10:48PM
Its just a cable, no TV's support any of those features yet and the PS3 can't do deep colour or any of the other things that HDMI 1.3 was designed for.
A list of specs doesn't make a machine great, blathering fanboys trying to defend their purchase of the PS3 also don't make it a great machine.
This is the first time I've seen people excited about a cable, not even a new type of cable but a new revision of a cable. Seriously HDMI and HDCP are a pain in the ass, I've lost count of the number of times I have seen HDMI devices lose handshake with displays, ending up with one or more reboots to get them friendly again.

Deep color give me a break. You can't even tell the friggin difference above 16 million colors unless you are an avian species. HDMI 1.3 = HDCP = DRM = sucks. DRM is the real reason this HDMI 1.3 crap is being shoved down your throats so willingly by the marketers. Apparently it's working. What a herd of sheep you geeks are! Oh, but I don't have to run an extra audio cable. Wow! Did they call Steve Jobs for that one? Brilliant!

The only reason the put HDMI 1.3 into PS3's was to get a buzz out so we all 'want' a HDMI 1.3 display and tuner (made by Sony they hope). Resolutions are hitting the soft-cap of 1080p, so let's start a HDMI version frenzy.
I can't say enough how much I wish I had embedded a component cable in the wall behind my display rather than an HDMI. It has been the biggest pain to deal with. Especially when HDMI was touted as solving all these issues and being a 1 cable solution. Absolute baloney.
HDCP = hairloss, nightmares, dropped cones of ice cream, termites, and all the other sad/annoying things in life.

PS3 plays games? I thought it was a REALLY well priced Linux
computer/BD Player.
