Toshiba's HD-E1 HD DVD player launches in Europe
HD DVD has finally touched down in Europe with the release of Toshiba's HD-E1 HD DVD player. For all intents and purposes identical to the second generation HD-A2 recently released in the U.S. it carries an MSRP of £450 and of course shares the HDMI 1.2 connector, slim design, 1080i output and lack of analog 5.1 outputs from its American cousin. The official Toshiba site mentions that at launch, the player will not be compatible with 25fps or 50hz encoded HD DVD titles, but will later after a firmware update, but its not clear if any such discs are available yet. A quick look at Amazon shows titles like V for Vendetta and Superman Returns ready to ship. Europe may have had to wait quite a while for HD DVD to hit but all in all are starting off with a much more refined product and pool of available titles to choose from. The high end HDMI 1.3-equipped 1080p-capable HD-XE1 is still set to ship in January, but we're really waiting to see what happens when Blu-ray movie exclusives in the U.S. become available on HD DVD in Europe via Studio Canal.[Via HDTV UK]

Blu-ray exclusives are already available on HD-DVD in Europe. I own TOTAL RECALL, for example, and can definitively say it looks 100 times better than the Blu-ray version. Different transfer, DRASTICALLY improved image.

People on AVS Forum are already importing Studio Canal releases. The movies are in English, and the only downside is that they have no extra features. However, if you want Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (not available at all in the US), Terminator 2 (BD exclusive in the States), etc, you can get them overseas and they play great.
Yet another weird twist in this format war.

Could you provide a link to one of the threads that states this? Thanks.

Aren't Blu-ray fans like your drunkard in-laws crashing the fun party with their banality?
I'm likely going to partake in a couple imports next year. Viva la distribution rights of Europe. Brotherhood of the Wolf here I come.

There are a few titles available right now. But Toshiba shipped just 1000 units to various shops. The problem is that every Player needs to import to Europe over sea, cause they aren`t made in Europe.
So, til mid January Toshiba will have shipped every Player to every person who pre-orders.
Every title which will release in the US will come to Europe one or two month after. Right now available are titles like: Mission Impossible I-III, Mission Impossible Ultimate Box, Miamai Vice, Fast and furious: Tokyo Drift etc.
