MicroDisplay planning to shake up 1080p LCoS HDTV market
We're all about driving down prices, thus we're all about MicroDisplay's apparent plans to break the LCoS market wide open when it starts throwing down at CES. The Silicon Valley startup has hopes to deliver "50-inch plus" LCoS sets to "major big box retailers" under "major CE brand names" soon after unveiling its product line in just about a month. The firm is banking on the skyrocketing HD sales, not to mention the phasing out of CRT-based sets, to propel its single-chip sets atop the market. By developing self-proclaimed "unique and proprietary 1080p LCoS digital projection imaging devices," the company is aiming to mass produce a 50-inch model with a lightning quick response time for "under $1,500." Taking a note from Philips' single-chip motif, the sets would eventually range from 50- to 62-inches, with most sets hitting retails floors "around summer 2007."

heck - a 50 incher for $1500 or so might get me to finally try an LCoS... or a 1080p for that matter - I'm perfectly happy with 720p/1080i for now on my Bravia XBR1 TVs

Great news. LyCoS is probably the best tech for HDTV's and the only one that seems to not have trade-offs (besides being slightly thicker than LCD's and Plasmas). Ever since I saw a Sony SXRD set I was in love, but I refuse to purchase a Sony TV. I told myself as soon as another well repsected and quality manufacturer makes a similar set, I'll look into it. Good thing. Under $1500? That's about 1/2 the price of the SXRD's. JVC makes the HD-ILA as well, but I'm looking forward to more LyCoS sets hitting the market. They beat DLP hands down and I personally don't like LCD (viewing angles annoy me) or Plasma (cost and pixel size).

I dont see what the big deal is; these sets will compete with colour wheel, single chip DLPs not 3 chip LCoS.

single chip lcos will be very weak. low light and color. will not fly

You can buy the 61" JVC HD-P61R1U from tigerdirect.com for $1899 now. This is the professional series. 3-chip LCOS.

I've seen these TVS, playing between Sony's 52" and 55" SXRD, and they look incredible. Sony's noise reduction is a bit better, but causes horizontal lines to look really fat and the leaves on trees to look shredded for some reason. The MicroDisplay LCOS sets show skin tones better.
Really though, all this talk of comparing the Sony/JVC sets againts MicroDisplay's products is useless; the MicroDisplay TVs are aimed at a completely different TV customer than somebody who can shell out $2k for a TV. This is a CRT-replacement, not a plasma-killer.
