Black Friday leads to record sales of HDTVs
Don't say we didn't have a sneaking suspicion this would happen, but HDTVs flew off the shelves quicker than anytime in the past year just a few weeks back, when everyone and their grandmother swarmed big box (and online) retailers to get their palms on a sale-priced set. Presumably in conjunction with sinking LCD prices and staggeringly great deals offered on Black Friday, the NPD Group is reporting record-breaking sales jumps. It was noted that plasma and LCD TVs were "the most highly sought after" (not to mention promoted), and while LCDs above 30-inches experienced 208.5-percent revenue growth and 297-percent unit growth, LCDs under 30-inches grew 26-percent in revenue and 86-percent in unit volume. And just so RPTVs and LCDs didn't steal all the glamour, plasmas saw a 63-percent jump in revenue and a 140-percent increase in unit volume. Same thing happened with us this year: helped my parents and wife's parents pick out a new HDTV. Both ended up going with Samsungs, and I don't think they can be happier. When older people who only watch Dancing With the Stars, Grey's Anatomy, and ER want a new HDTV, I think we can assume it is mainstream.

We got out first HDTV a year ago, and I think it was a major influencer. If you have friends or family that come over and see high-definition for the first time, it tends to claim significant mindshare.

With LCD prices dropping and ownership cost of HDTV as a whole dropping, it isnt surprising. LCDs aggressive pricing and availability is really helping to drive down HDTV to where its somewhat affordable to average consumers like myself.
I bought my 37 Syntax LCD HDTV at the beginning of the year for a grand and it was a great price back then. Now, theyre readily available for under that with a lot of other brands and selections included into that price range.
