PS3 doesn't do 1080i?
That's what IGN has discovered in testing several PlayStation 3 games. Despite 1080p being "the true definition of HD", most of the titles available are rendered internally at 1280 x 720 and scaled up accordingly... or at least that's what should happen. On many older CRT HDTVs that only support 1080i input and not 720p, instead of scaling to the appropriate HD resolution, the PS3 goes back down to the positively Wii-like EDTV standard of 480p. The problem is confirmed to exist in Resistance: Fall of Man, Tiger Woods 07, Need for Speed Carbon and NHL 2K7 so far, but no word from Sony if this can or will be fixed in a downloadable update. The Xbox 360 scales to 1080i without a problem -- although 1080p results may vary -- if you're not reading this from your place in line already be sure to check your HDTV's manual for supported input resolutions before grabbing a lawn chair (and bulletproof vest).[Thanks, Michael J.]

Ah.. the first of many Sony quality issues.
1st post =P
Shawn @ Nov 16th 2006 1:33PM
Isn't EDTV considered 520p? SDTV is 480p?
Just my $.02
What next Sony, What next?
Porsche 911 @ Nov 16th 2006 2:36PM
What is next? A new firmware upgrade.
Ed @ Nov 17th 2006 8:22PM
No. EDTV is 480p SDTV is 480i or less.
Lisel @ Nov 16th 2006 1:45PM
Well that definitely blows. I have a 3-year-old Sony RPTV that does 1080i but not 720p. It cost no small sum, so I hope Sony addresses this matter and allows for upscaling.
Porsche 911 @ Nov 16th 2006 2:34PM
Do not worry; there would be a firmware upgrade soon.
DaveH @ Nov 16th 2006 1:54PM
This is for games written @ 720P ONLY. 1080P games + Blu-ray movies = no problem.
Franssu @ Nov 16th 2006 3:54PM
DaveH, you're aware that most games will have a native resolution of 720p, are you ?
Rick Lyon @ Nov 16th 2006 1:54PM
Doesn't affect my HDTV, so that is still a major oversight and one of many blunders in recent history of Sony. I',m not sure how many this will affect, but that's still some that will be unrightfully left out in the cold after dropping close to a $800 or so for the bundles.
Derrick @ Nov 16th 2006 2:38PM
EDTV is 480p and yes this is an oversite 'cause there are still plenty of 1080i crt/crt rp still around.
Smeagol @ Nov 16th 2006 2:45PM
Question: if you set the global output to 1080i, why would it suddenly switch to 480p for gaming but keep it at 1080i for the OS?
Since this 'issue' hasnt been confirmed or replicated by anyone else, it sounds like a user issue.
John @ Nov 16th 2006 3:16PM
I am a huge spammer: sortnews@yahoo.com
DaveH @ Nov 16th 2006 3:45PM
Yes, I am aware that most launch games, if not most games period will be authored at 720p.
Aron @ Nov 16th 2006 3:48PM
On a related note, the recent CNET review of the PS3 (http://reviews.cnet.com/Sony_PlayStation_3_60GB/4505-6464_7-31355103.html) says it also does not upscale DVDs. So it appears one can say, more generally, that the PS3 has no upscaling capability, period -- it can't upscale 720p games to 1080i, and can't upscale DVDs at all.
Jeremy Kates @ Nov 17th 2006 11:10AM
I can't get over the looks. That thing looks like something out of that 70's show. Seriously looks junky. It looks good on a Flat screen TV(they copied from Samsung), but looks horrible as a console. My viewpoint anyway.
n2 @ Nov 17th 2006 10:18PM
Btw, when is someone (hint) going to review PS3's blu-ray capabilities? I want to read a comparison vs Samsung's player.
Joe @ Nov 17th 2006 10:53PM
Buy a BNC to DVI cable.

ive got the kds-r50sxrd1 and the ps3. i when i was configuering the ps3 to the native res of the tv it would allow 720p?. the tvs native res. is 1080p, but yet it will still play the tallidega nights blu-ray dvd. i thought only blu-ray can be displayed in 1080p. but the picture was pretty darn good but i would say no better then regular hd 1080i or 720p.
Tostada @ Nov 18th 2006 2:10AM
I thought that is was a requirement that the set support 720p and 1080i. If you have a set that doesn't support 720p, then you purchased a crap TV. The six year old Rear Projection set I just got rip of supported both.
spencer @ Nov 18th 2006 1:11PM
i mean it would only allow 720p. not the 1080p.
GhostDoggy @ Nov 23rd 2006 8:58AM

Just because a display device doesn't support the lower common HDTV resolution natively doesn't mean it is crap. That may your opinion, but that is all it means. Some people prefer the resolution of 1080 lines over 720 lines, and prefer 1920 pixels to 1280.
BTW, I could forward an equally singular opinion that if your display doesn't support RGBHV then your display is crap. Why would I want to be abused by allowing someone to feed me higher definition video with compressed color reolution that Component video affords? I'd much rather have completely unadulterated (uncompressed) color resolution.

I am needing someone's help. I am wanting to buy a PS3 but am a little nervous about this resolution issue. I have a HDTV (Toshiba 46H83), it supports 1080i, but in the manual I believe it says it also supports 720p, 480p, and 480i. I have looked around on the web but have found nothing saying it supports 720p. If I do, buy the PS3, will I have this resolution issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I purchased a PS3 this week as well as the latest Samsung 32 HD LCD televsion. The televsion looks great. Some games for the PS3 looked nice like the downloadable demo. . .MotoStorm. The BlueRay player scaled down to 480p which was basically like buying a $40 progressive scan dvd player from Radio Shack.
I am very disapointed with the PS3 and retured it yesterday. I now have the HD DVD player for the XBOX-360 and it looks amazing!!!
Don't waste your money on the PS3. No good launch titles and does not support most televsions. Not to mention it dosent even come with HDMI or Component cables. So much for an HD gaming system. Go figure. . .
I would like to see Sony take a major hit. This has been a hudge headache and major waste of time and money.

I have a Toshiba 50H82 High Def set I bought in Jan 2003. How do I know whether it supports 720p or not? I have looked in the manual at the specs in the appendix and it does not say!\
See for yourself as amazon.com has the instruction manual in .PDF form at the link below.
So how can I tell whether or not the PS3 will display games in High-Def for my TV????

Not to worry anymore.
The PS3 does indeed have an up-scaling chip but has been hidden or not activated yet for a strange reason.

and here is the "techno" info of this up-scaling chip

So hopefully soon, all these issues will be fixed.
LoneThistle @ Dec 31st 2006 4:48PM
for the guy who said that 480p looks almost the same as 1080i..........STFU!!!!!! you don't know what you are talking about. I too have a 480p\1080i tv with no 720p support. The only game I have is Restance: Fall of Man and it will only play on 480p. It looks like pure shit.
Sony PS3 sucks!!! If they dont fix this problem before my 30 days is up on my reciept I am going to return there piece of shit, overpriced, wannabe Gaming System. Blue Ray movies also look NO better than regular dvd. FIX IT SONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
