Monster PS3 HDMI cable price: $100
Sony's new PlayStation 3 begins the HD Era according to the company, but the box won't include any of the cables necessary to take you there. Sure the old component cables from the PS2 will still work, but with many gamers clamoring for 1080p and digital output to put that brand new HDMI 1.3 connector to use. Monster Cable has revealed its lineup for the Playstation 3 launch and the prices are awe-inspiring. For the low, low price of $99.95 gamers can have the privilege of owning a 2-meter GameLink HDMI cable with a DuraFlex jacket that "complements the look of your PS3", as well as other nice sounding features to make sure nothing interferes with your 1080p gaming. Also featured are similarly-priced fiber optic audio and component video cables that are certain to be prominently placed in the videogames section of your local electronics retailer. Unless you know where to find cables for less, avoiding the assault on your wallet this holiday season could be difficult.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

What a monstrous rip-off!!!
Cody Turner @ Nov 1st 2006 12:51PM
Monster cables generally are overpriced.

Please, monorprice.com. And until I see reviews with data stating that bluejeans or bettercables is better than monoprice.com then I will assume monoprice in simply the best option. You just can't beat their prices and I have no reason to assume their quality is less then adequate as I have quite a few HDMI cables, an DVI>HDMI adapter, HDMI 5x1 HDMI switch and have never had an issue with their products. And you simply can not beat their prices. Engadget may like bluejeancables but their prices aren't that spectacular.
Monster is simply average product with a 500% mark up.

waste of money. Not worth it.
Rick Lyon @ Nov 1st 2006 1:14PM
I also hope Engadget was being facetious when saying the $99 price was low, low for a lousy 6' feet of cable. I can get 25' for $35 at monoprice.com.
The only question is, is the PS3 port a Sony plug only port that they will sell licenses for so that Monster and/or a few other overpriced cable manufacturers are going to be creating the cables for?
Jason @ Nov 2nd 2006 1:09PM
As odd as it seems, Sony actually put a regular HDMI jack on the back of the PS3. I'm confused and scared too.
I like stuff like this because HDMI is a digital cable. Digital as in "1" and "0" or "on" and "off". The cable either works perfectly or doesn't work at all. There's no middle ground with interference.

For those few who are willing to spend $100 on an HDMI cable (in addition to $600 for the friggin console), please do us all a favor and hang yourself with it.
Schumann @ Nov 1st 2006 3:50PM
What Rick Lyon said! I swear by monoprice's HDMI/DVI cables switches et al!
And the port on the PS3 is (supposedly) just regular, non-proprietary HCP-capable HDMI port (redundant, considering HDCP is part of the spec, but just for clarity!)
joel @ Nov 1st 2006 6:05PM
So that puts the price well over $700 with tax for the HDMI cable and the damn console, what a rip-off. Unbelievable.
Wayne @ Nov 2nd 2006 7:58AM
Gee, that's funny, I don't remember seeing "$100 for cables" anywhere in Sony's console comparison table. I hope Sony goes under as a company largely due to the PS3 and nothing but.
agent864 @ Nov 2nd 2006 9:18AM
You don't have to buy the $100 overpriced crap cables from Monster. You can find quality hdmi cables for $35 or less. The price on Monster products is pure margin, with any extra costs going to marketing as opposed to quality and quality control. With the PS3 you're not stuck into having to buy hdmi cables from Sony or Monster or anyone else. And your PS2 component out works with the PS3 as well. Not as good as including component out in the box but not bad either.

As we've mentioned on the site before, digital cables only carry correct data, or none at all. There is no way to "improve" the quality of a digital signal, so buying cables for a huge markup over other brands is only worth it if you really, really like the feel of the physical cable -- or something.
For what it's worth, I bought and used monoprice cabling for my recent Olevia LCD review, and I was really impressed with both signal and cable build quality, especially for the cost. So I'll second these other comments on places to buy cabling.

Confucius say, "Fool and his money soon parted."
Seriously, I wish I had thought up a scam half as good as Monster cables -- $3 worth of plastic and metal that you put in a package covered in pseudo-scientific claptrap, then sell it for $100+.
GhostDoggy @ Nov 4th 2006 5:44AM
Rick (Lyon), I think Engadget and its related websites are spinlogs. They never have anything bad to say about a company. When was the last time they said something bad about Monster, Bose, etc., etc., etc.? Sorry, this is an ad-in-ad website and nothing should be taken beyond the make and model availability of a product or service. I agree 100% about monoprice, but don't expect the likes of Engadget to say anything (let alone nice) about that company (so I will, 24 AWG 10-footer for about $21)!
Richard Lawler @ Nov 4th 2006 12:25PM
Luckily, we linked to a post about monoprice in this post, so anyone who is looking "where to find cables for less" should be able to find our previous post about them, and all the comments from satisfied buyers. We do not advocate buying 6 foot HDMI cables for $100. We also do not advocate reaching into woodchippers "to see if you can get it unjammed", going to meet that lonely teen girl you met on AIM "just to talk" or any combination of liquor, karaoke and showtunes.
