Sony's BDP-S1 Blu-ray player delayed again...again
The last time SonyStyle pushed back the anticipated ship date of the BDP-S1 standalone Blu-ray player, we jokingly suggested it might end up being pushed beyond the (at that point) already delayed-until-November PlayStation 3. Apparently the joke is on anyone still waiting for this box; while the $999 price hasn't changed, it is now expected to ship "on or about December 4, 2006". In light of the previous July, August, and October prognostications, the Playstation 3 shortage, battery fiasco, and even a just-announced delay of the LF-Box1 LocationFree TV streamer, Sony's manufacturing prowess seems to be slipping. Some customers who contacted Sony have reported that those who have already ordered the BDP-S1 might receive shipments before December, but these days you can't really take anything for granted.

I swear you guys get money from Sony; the amount of biased articles you write is ridiculous. They screwed up Betamax and MiniDisc and are currently screwing up Blu-Ray and PS3. How many times has both been delayed and the shoddy titles they release, they expect us to pay a silly amount for a "Beta" player that still has lots of bugs to fine tune. Sony has their heads so far up their own backside. XBOX 360/HD DVD will be everyones choice this Christmas despite your claims as people want the cheapest goods possible. 99% of people can't tell the visual difference between the two formats so far. As for your King Kong article, just because it may not feature TrueHD, you come across as it being a slim-picking title. How many good films has Blu-Ray released?! I can count them on one hand. How many units can decode TrueHD? And who actually cares, there are too many "high-end" audio codecs as it is. XBOX360/HDDVD with King Kong...bye Sony!
Also, the fact Blu-Ray having one over on HD DVD by having 50GB discs is purely a myth as HD DVD has triple layer 45GB discs ready and waiting when the Studios require the extra space. 30GB for a movie coded in VC-1 is the sweet spot for 1080p compression, so who needs 50GB MPEG2 Blu-Ray discs. The VC-1 codec is now compressing at 10mbps per movie, action movies as well, showing how the codec has grown over the past year, a Microsoft Codec. Sticking with MPEG is going against the trend. Once Blu-Ray take some common sense and adopt VC-1, the price of the players will be the factor, and HD DVD has let its technology be used for cheaper alternative Asian-produced players, which means very cheap players. Once a player hits the sub 100 mark, the better the market will become and one will become the outright winner, not looking good for the Sony rip-off money machine. As for being adopted by the masses, the PS3 is negated by the XBOX 360. The PS3 gets connected to normal CRT non-HDTV for the kids, the family picks up the free Blu-Ray disc and sticks it in, then realises theres no difference from a normal DVD and throws away the idea of buying more Blu-Ray software, that being the key! As for the software, XBOX360 on the other hand, if you actually put the effort in to know about it and buy the HD DVD add on (it wont be bought for XBOXs in kids rooms hooked up to 4:3 CRTs) it being a HD DVD, common sense tells you it needs a HDTV. Those who buy the HD DVD add-on will buy HD DVDs as no other reason for owning it. With every HD DVD drive sold per head, you are looking at someone who will buy the discs, with the PS3 not necessarily.

I totally disagree with your post.
I think this site is very fair a balanced. You say right in your post "As for your King Kong article, just because it may not feature TrueHD, you come across as it being a slim-picking title" - this could not be more inaccurate. The entire point of the post was that King Kong was getting a new, very cool, addition of HDi. The jist of the post is that it has more than mosts HD-DVD's.

Genk, you really dont know what you are talking about...
Blu-Ray is as much Sony format as it is to the othes companys in Blu-ray Disc Association http://www.blu-raydisc.com/
Also the HD DVD drive does not have HDMI http://www.engadgethd.com/2006/09/28/on-xbox-1080p-and-the-lack-of-hdmi/ and no HD gaming with it also. Its useless for movies and games. I wonder why they have made it first place!
Better update your data and stop spreading misinformation!

Does that make you happy? here is your HDMI cable for the Xbox 360 made by Microsoft.

Settle down Genk. While most of the contributors to this sit like a good spirited argument, with strong opinions and support being offered by both sides, if you stick around long enough you'll see that things are pretty balanced. For example, Matt Burns thinks HD DVD will outright win the format war and has offered compelling arguments in articles like: http://www.engadgethd.com/2006/07/11/why-hd-dvd-will-prevail-my-opinion-three-months-later/

This is a silly comment. No HDMI so it is worthless? Come on. So is HD gameing on a 360 worthless because it is using comonent as the interconnect? In a word, No. There have even been reports of compenent looking better than HDMI (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=737286).

I work at P.C. Richards and Son, and in my system we are due to get this player 12/12/06. Warning though our system sucks, and is never right, and usually takes longer so this thing wont be out for at least another 8 months, lol. Sony corp. the new Microsoft.... sad.

I don't know why you'd buy this box anyway. It's $400 more than a premium PS3, and does less (and I'm not just talking games- think network connectivity). I have an HD DVD player and I love it, but I have a feeling Blu-ray will come out on top. So I'm planning on getting a PS3. That way, if BD does win, I'm covered. If it doesn't, its still a next-gen game console. Now, PS3s are going to be hard to come by, so if Sony were to price their BDP-S1 in the $500-600 range, I might consider it. But the only way I'd pay $1,000 for a standalone BD Player would be if it were also a recorder.
As to Genk's comments, think about this: Toshiba is the only manufacturer making standalone HD DVD players. There are at least 4 different manufacturers making BD players. Which format is more proprietary?
As for your capacity argument, the maximum theoretical capacity for HD DVD is 60gb (Dual-sided dual layered). The max theoretical capacity for BD is 200gb (also dual-sided, dual layered). That's a HUGE difference! Even if they only get the 100gb disc out there, that's nearly twice the theoretical capacity of HD DVD! While that doesn't make a difference for picture quality, think of entire seasons of TV on 1 or 2 discs. Or the Entire Lord of the Rings Extended Editions on 1 Disc. I'd love to have that!
And Warner is using VC-1 for their Blu-ray discs already. I think by next year, all of the studios will be using that or MPEG-4 and the codec arguments will be a non-issue.
I work for Best Buy. When people bought 360s, they bought HDTVs to go with them, or they already had them. Sure, plenty are hooked up to SDTVs, but a lot of people willing to pay $400 for a 360 were willing to pay $600-1000 for a nice HDTV. You think somebody who's willing to pay $600 for a game console won't be willing to buy a TV that costs the same or more? Heck, if ony 25% of the people who get a PS3 connect it to an HDTV, that's 100,000 Blu-ray capable players. And they don't have to buy an external device to get it to work. Heck, if parents are spending $600 for their kids game machine in the other room, they're just spoiling them, but the kids may want to get the Blu-ray versions anyway. They'll have new BD-J and IME type bonus features that are way better than anything DVD is capable of. Have you seen the IME on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? It seems like a feature just made for kids!
I'm not saying HD DVD is bad. I love the format so far. But I'm open to the possibility that Blu-ray may be the format of choice in a year or two.
I'll never understand the animosity against Sony. All the products I've ever bought from them have worked just fine.

TJ - "...think of entire seasons of TV on 1 or 2 discs. Or the entire Lord of the Rings Extended Editions on 1 Disc."
NEVER will happen. Studios love to milk their content with 2-disc, 3-disc, 4-disc+ "Special Collector's Edition" and/or "Boxed Set" etc. With any premium film/tv content of very long running times, you will NEVER see a release presented on just 1 or 2 discs. It's all about maxed-out marketing, and getting as much $$$ from the consumer as possible.
TJ - "Toshiba is the only manufacturer making standalone HD DVD players".
Well, get ready for January's Consumer Electronics Show, when more companies will be added. Already, this site previously indicated that LITE-ON will be making players for both high-disc formats next Spring, and I'd imagine there will definitely be others announcing their HD DVD support during 2007.
As for computer/media center support, major companies already support HD DVD, being Microsoft, Intel, HP, Apple, Acer, and probably Lenovo. Do you really want to doubt HD DVD's long term "health" as a viable format by going up against Microsoft?
As for Toshiba, remember they are the 2nd largest Japanese electronics company (second only to Hitachi), and I don't expect they will have a problem supplying HD DVD players as the format continues it's growth, and current popularity of being the #1 selling HD-disc format.

Sony! Drop Blu Ray and let Apple take over. This will solve all the issue's.
