Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-ray player reviewed
The Panasonic DMP-BD10 is the second standalone Blu-ray player to become available, not quite making its expected September launch but sneaking onto store shelves near you this month. Was it worth the wait and/or the $1,300 price tag? Compared to the Samsung BD-P1000 player, reviewers note a slightly better picture quality and load times, plus excellent audio output. It doesn't support next-gen lossless audio codecs like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD out of the box but, those are promised for a future firmware update. Negatives include a clunky remote and lack of BD-Live connectivity that will be present in the PlayStation 3. This player appears to do the same 1080p to 1080i to 1080p conversion present in the Samsung, so if 1080p/24 output is a must, it's a pass. Still, with EZ-SYNC HDMI control to matching SA-XR700 receiver and flat panel HDTV, if you must have the best Blu-ray hardware available -- at least until Sony and Pioneer's offerings hit the street -- the DMP-BD10 is ready to give it to you.

Phoenixxx1974 @ Oct 15th 2006 12:17AM
why? when you can get the PS3 for ALOT cheaper.

I tried resisting the urge, but the all caps forced my hand. "ALOT" is not a word. That is all.

#2 - Chances are the PS3 won't be anywhere near as good as one of the standalone players.
Your question SHOULD have been "Why? When you can get an HD-DVD player for less than $400." You'll even get lossless audio NOW, instead of with the Blu-Ray favorite motto, "We'll be good LATER."

to xyzzy i totally agree i have a HD-DVD player and i love it. Yes it's a bit slow to load up but it looks amazing. But what i meant is if he has to have blu-ray go with the PS3 seeing how SOny has mentioned there wil be few PS3's but even FEWER blu-ray player seeing how they are having problems developing the blu-ray diode and want to concentrate on the PS3 more then the standalone players.
Also don't forget that you can get a HD-DVD player for the XBox 360 for just $200 with a free copy of King Kong is the report was true which is sweet. King Kong wil look awesome in HD. I think HD-DVD has MUCH better movies. I have already more then 20 like Enter the Dragon, Willy Wonka (old and new), Batman Begins, Serenity and lots more. Also coming soon what i can't wait for is MATRIX is HD will be awesome and look super sweet.

If you ouput a 1080p bluray move to a 1080p TV there would be no loss of PQ. In this situation PS3 can't be any less of a bluray player than a stand alone machine.

Yet another stand alone Blu-Ray player that is DOA. I'm amazed the Blu-Ray effort is even alive. If it weren't for the PS3, nobody would buy Blu-Ray.

I want blu-ray to be good... :(

I'm having a hard time getting excited over either format. I mean, $1300 for a player? That only has a dozen or so titles, some of which I already have? The PS3 has a lot riding on it's little shoulders, I think.
The fact is this: both formats just aren't as valuable to the general market like DVD was over VHS. Improved picture quality for the %15 of customers in the US who have TVs to support it is not the same leap that all of DVD's features brought to the table. I suspect it will be another year before there's any movement for either format.

I like the fact that these idiots sony fanboys can't afford a blu ray play, yet they seem to defend it over HD DVD which has clearly shown that it's superior in terms of price, picture, sound, reliability, movies quantity, availability and it's already in it's 2nd gen (3rd gen with Xbox 360 HD DVD?). Why are you so hell bend to defend a format that you CAN'T AFFORD!!!! Check reviews http://www.thedvdwars.com/index.cfm!!!
